The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness at work. This annual event was initiated by the labour movement 38 years ago to increase awareness of on-the-job injuries and fatal workplace accidents. This day of remembrance was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, more than six years after it was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1985. This year’s theme is “Workers’ Resources, Rights and Victories”.

In the last few years, we’ve seen huge changes in postal work. E-commerce, digital communications, and new technologies are transforming the postal and delivery industry. While internet services have replaced a large share of traditional lettermail volumes, e-commerce has driven massive fluctuations in parcels volumes. In 2019, for the first time, Canada post earned more revenue from parcels than lettermail. And since the COVID-19 pandemic, this trend has only accelerated.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

On February 19 and 20, the second round of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa.
The format for these hearings will be similar to the first. Commissioner Kaplan has asked both CUPW and Canada Post to provide him with written submissions before the hearings begin.

During the last convention, the Regional Internal Organizing Committees were formalized as per clause 4.15 of the National Constitution, with a mandate to, among other things, promote the benefits of organizing by developing materials and tools that facilitate work floor mobilization and to identify effective actions in the continued fight for worker rights.
