Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

OTTAWA - Postal workers are in Yellowknife today at Canada Post’s Annual Public Meeting, bringing a message to the directors of the crown corporation: innovate, expand, and include Northern residents’ needs in plans for the postal service’s future.

The first modification is found under Clause 8.03, “Period Prior to 2004”. It states that, for route holders and permanent relief employees, the period prior to January 1, 2004 during which a person worked as a Rural Route and Suburban Service Contractor will now be recognized for the purpose of seniority under Clause 8.02.

Dear Sisters and Brothers, Just before summer, Canada Post announced the implementation of another initiative – the separation of sorting from delivery through the creation of routers’ assignments. Following this announcement, and after meeting with the employer, the Union put forward some reasonable propositions for the creation of space to accommodate the steep increase in the number of parcels to be delivered. We suggested that CPC purchase the land for sale next to the Laval West depot and expand the facility, use different postal equipment and process the mail in “waves”.

Members of Unifor have occupied the Northstar Aerospace plant in Milton, Ontario. The plant was purchased by Heligear Acquisition Co. in 2012. Heligear intends to move the plant to Chicago, cutting jobs and leaving the workers’ pension with a massive deficit. Unifor members at Northstar have been told their pension will be reduced by 25%. After months of negotiations, Unifor has been forced to take drastic action.

Members of the Bee Clean bargaining unit have voted 78% in favour of their new collective agreement. These CUPW members are responsible for cleaning the Kitchener, Hamilton and Windsor Mail Processing facilities in the Ontario Region. The new terms and conditions are effective August 2, 2017 when CUPW and the representatives of the employer signed the new contract.
