All members actively at work were required to attest to vaccination status by November 26 or be placed on leave without pay. This is an update for those who did attest. Canada Post Corporation has established a national safety audit and compliance team to perform random spot-checks. You may be contacted and asked for proof of the status you attested to.

In our last bulletin published on October 8, 2021, we informed you of the deadlines by which Canada Post was to send information to the various workers’ compensation boards in the provinces where CUPW members are awaiting a pay adjustment related to a work injury that occurred after January 1, 2016.

It’s been 32 years since 14 young women were murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique in an act of violence that shook the country to its core. December 6 now marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. On this day, we honour and remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.

This is a follow-up from our bulletin dated November 25 announcing that our Cease and Desist application against Canada Post’s mandatory vaccination practice was denied. As per the jurisprudence, in order for a Cease and Desist to be granted, the Union must meet all of the five (5) criteria specified in clause 9.93 of the Urban collective agreement.

Arbitrator Burkett did not grant the cease and desist order against Canada Post’s vaccination practice. Due to the short timeline in the implementation of the practice, the arbitrator advised the parties of his decision, and will send his reasoning and the full decision at a later date.

CUPW has filed a cease and desist application against Canada Post’s vaccination practice which will be heard by Arbitrator Burkett on November 24, 2021. We have also filed national grievances against the practice. CUPW supports voluntary COVID-19 vaccination, and is proud that many of our members have been vaccinated. However, CUPW is concerned that the mandatory vaccination practice goes farther than required.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

CUPW is currently seeking CUPW worker organizers (article 10.17) in every Region to be trained to assist with CUPW campaigns to organize new private sector bargaining units. These positions will begin sometime in 2023 and will be utilized as required. The successful candidates will be tasked with collaborating primarily with the National Union Representative for External Organizing and their respective Regional office, as well as the 3rd National Vice-President and any Locals involved in the campaign.

The Pay Equity Act (the Act) requires federally regulated employers with an average of at least 10 employees to establish and maintain compensation practices that provide for pay equity. Canada Post is therefore required to have a pay equity plan and to establish one or more pay equity committees.

The Canada Post Corporation (CPC) and The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) had a first consultation on October 27, 2022, to discuss CPC’s interpretation and implementation of the 10 paid sick days as per the Canada Labour Code (CLC).

Our school system relies on these workers – meaning all working families rely on them. They are primarily women, and they have seen shrinking real wages for too long. More than half of them need to work a second job just to make ends meet. They care for and support our children’s education, and these conditions are unacceptable.

The Canada Post Defined Benefit Pension plan covers all permanent full and part time letter carriers, MSCs, clerks, RSMCs (who have routes over 12 hours a week), clerks, mail handlers, dispatchers, technical services, and RSMC Permanent Relief.In a limited number of situations, it covers temporary Urban Operations workers who are covering a single known in advance assignment of six months or more.

In the spring of 2022, CUPW and the other unions at Canada Post were approached by the Corporation to request our collaboration for a virtual conference on occupational Health and Safety. However, at the same time, CPC is adopting a punitive approach towards Health and Safety.
