TORONTO – Hearings continued in Toronto today in which the results could be a defining moment for gig economy workers in Canada. The misclassification of gig workers as independent contractors instead of dependent contractors or employees is being fought by Foodora couriers at the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB).

Since May 1, when this campaign launched, the organizing campaign by Foodora couriers in Toronto and Mississauga has been intense and high-profile. CUPW is proud to join their struggle and welcome them as members. Since our last bulletin on the campaign, we’ve accomplished a lot.

Ahead of historic vote, employer threatens and intimidates couriers

It has officially begun... Fellow Foodora workers – On Wednesday, July 31st at 4:15pm, Foodsters United (CUPW) filed an application for certification of our union to the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB). A package was also delivered to Foodora HQ by a delegation of workers. This is a historic moment for couriers and gig workers in Ontario. We will now have a vote on Thursday to win our right to have our union certified!

Toronto – Postal workers and their allies took to the streets of Toronto this afternoon, marching to Nathan Philips Square, to support Foodora bike and car couriers who are fighting for their rights as workers.

Bicycle and car couriers in the Toronto area working for Foodora, an app-based food delivery company, have been working with our organizers in a campaign to join CUPW. The couriers are fighting for better health and safety protections, fair compensation for they work they perform, and for the right to join a union.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Yesterday, August 20, CUPW’s Negotiating Committees returned to the bargaining table to present comprehensive global offers for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units. While we had planned to meet again tomorrow, Canada Post has told us today that it needs more time to review our offers.

Unfortunately, our scheduled meetings for Friday, August 15th and Monday, August 18th, have been postponed. The Federal mediators will not be able to assist CUPW and CPC due to their current involvement in the Air Canada negotiations.

After pressing the Employer to come back to the bargaining table early last week, we received a response from Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger on Friday evening, just hours after we posted Bulletin 128, “CUPW is Waiting for Canada Post.” In his letter, Mr. Ettinger stuck to the lines we’ve heard from Canada Post for many months now.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
