Effective December 19, letter carriers in Montreal and Québec City will no longer have to deliver the Trans-Continental neighbourhood mail in its current form. Canada Post has paused the delivery of the product after mounting pressure from the Union. The delivery of the Trans-Continental neighbourhood mail began in Montréal the week of October 17, 2022, and in Québec City around December 13, 2022. The Québec City local was not consulted prior to start of the delivery.

In early July of this year, Canada Post approached the Union with a slip, trip and fall pilot project. The pilot project would use an American based company that provides a slip, trip and fall simulator. Summer is late this year. With a few exceptions across the country, where they have experienced brief periods of heat, the hot weather is overdue. However, we must not regard this situation as the norm and disregard the eventual heat waves that will inevitably occur in the weeks to come. The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness at work. This annual event was initiated by the labour movement 38 years ago to increase awareness of on-the-job injuries and fatal workplace accidents. This day of remembrance was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, more than six years after it was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1985. This year’s theme is “Work Shouldn’t Hurt: Choosing Health and Safety as a Fundamental Right and Principle at Work”.

Arbitration on CUPW’s grievance against Canada Post Corporation’s mandatory vaccination practice continued March 21 and 22, 2022. CUPW completed its cross-examination of CPC’s expert witness which we began during the last hearing (held in February). CUPW also cross-examined CPC’s main material witness. Witness examinations are now over, and the parties will exchange written submissions this week.

The third hearing on the merit of the National Grievance against Canada Post’s Mandatory Vaccination Practice was held on February 12, 2022. It followed hearings held on December 16, 2021, and January 18, 2022.

Canada Post Corporation has advised CUPW of an intention to discontinue access to High-Risk Leave provisions for members starting February 21, 2022. The Corporation advised members in writing in January; some members may have already received a letter. CPC’s position is that members who have a condition preventing them from coming back to work should apply for other types of leave. CUPW disagrees with the Corporation’s intent to unilaterally cancel the leave and recommends that members who may be affected file grievances, both for the cancellation of the High-Risk Leave and/or the denial of other forms of leave.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.
