On Day 18, Cathy Kennedy, member of the negotiating committee, testified to our demands to increase the amount of injury on duty pay for both bargaining units and to have RSMCs who are injured at work be paid directly by Canada Post. This would give RSMCs equality with Urban.

Recently I attended the Canada Post Annual General Meeting held in St. John’s NL. Also attending was Nancy Beauchamp, CUPW National Director for Montreal, several representatives from the CUPW Atlantic Regional Office and members and executive officers from the St. John’s local. The meeting was chaired by Susan Margles, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs. Both CPC President Doug Ettinger and Chief Financial Officer Wayne Cheeseman addressed several issues of importance to CUPW members. Here are some of the issues they raised.

“It always seems to be impossible, until it’s done” is a quote largely attributed to Nelson Mandela. Research suggests the quote or an altered version is actually over 2,000 years old and has been used as inspiration to fight for a better future. The problems are real. Our solutions are sound and now is the time for action in the streets, in our workplaces and in our communities to deliver results. This Action Plan is a blueprint to build a stronger CUPW, a mobilized membership and more vibrant and environmentally friendly communities.

Pride month is here! While it is a celebration, Pride is also a political rally and a march to claim public space that cannot be taken for granted. On one hand we have seen progress over the past few decades since Pride marches began – the struggle gets results! On the other hand, violence and injustices persist and there is much for LGBTQ activists and allies yet to achieve.

On Day 15, Toni MacAfee – Atlantic Regional Education and Organization Officer testified about negative, non-medical comments that Canada Post management was telling Great-West Life/Morneau Shepell Case Managers to enter in employees’ STDP files. After that, Geoff Bickerton – Director of Research testified on the history of Group 1 staffing and how we have fought for many years to maximize full-time employment and how important this issue is to us.

Deadline to Apply: June 24, 2019 - CUPW is looking for coordinators to carry out union work around the upcoming 2019 federal elections. The coordinator positions are open to MIGS only. From now until late October, the Union will be working with thousands of organizations and individuals to protect and expand postal services. It will place particular focus on concrete actions the postal service can take in the fight against climate change. The coordinators will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of CUPW’s plan.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Commissioner Kaplan’s report of the Industrial Inquiry Commission skews heavily in favour of Canada Post’s positions and recommendations. We fundamentally disagree with the bulk of its recommendations and challenge some of the information on which it was based. We have also objected to the entire process, but we felt that we had to participate in order to give voice to postal workers. The report also outlines three possible steps forward after May 22. It is important to note that this is not a done deal. It is up to Minister Patty Hajdu to decide what to do with the report – if anything at all.

May 18 is Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. Every year, on this day, we remember the Tamil people who have died since 1948 because of the genocide committed against the Tamil people by the Sri Lankan state, including the massacre in Mullivaikkal, Sri Lanka, in May 2009.

We received Commissioner Kaplan’s lengthy report today on bargaining between CUPW and Canada Post. It comes out of the Industrial Inquiry Commission convened by the former Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon, under section 108 of the Canada Labour Code.

Canada Post put out a message today to all CUPW members in the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers units about benefits coverage and working conditions upon the expiry of the collective agreements on May 22.

This afternoon, Canada Post negotiators informed CUPW that they were leaving the bargaining table, calling it a “temporary pause,” to put together another set of offers. Canada Post would not provide a date for when the Union will receive these proposals. It could be in a few days; it could be next week. Given the seriousness of the matter, it is reprehensible to keep workers and the public on edge when we should all be focused on negotiating good collective agreements that will benefit workers and grow our public service to meet the needs of all Canadians.

The Union has been actively pursuing confirmation from Canada Post that it will respect the post-retirement benefits entitlements of retiring members. The Union was looking to confirm that members who retire will be eligible for post-retirement benefits in the event that the retirement would occur during a labour disruption.
