Retraction: Canada Post Corporation advised CUPW today (December 15, 2021) that it has revised its plans after discussions with CUPW, and will not end high-risk leave on January 22, 2022 as originally planned. Bulletin 326 (December 14, 2021) regarding high-risk leave is no longer accurate.

CUPW has filed a cease and desist application against Canada Post’s vaccination practice which will be heard by Arbitrator Burkett on November 24, 2021. We have also filed national grievances against the practice. CUPW supports voluntary COVID-19 vaccination, and is proud that many of our members have been vaccinated. On February 24, 2021 Canada Post Corporation and the leadership of all the postal unions sent a joint letter requesting that Canada Post employees be given special attention in the prioritization of the distribution of vaccines. The letter was signed by myself, on behalf of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, and by Francois Paradis, National President of the Union of Postal and Communications Employees (UPCE), Brenda McAuley, National President of the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA), Michael Ling, National President of the Association of Postal Officials of Canada (APOC) and Susan Margles, Chief People and Safety Officer for Canada Post.

Since a COVID-19 outbreak was declared at the Canada Post Gateway facility in Mississauga earlier this year, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers has demanded an investigation into the root cause of the outbreak and what needs to be done to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.
