It is with deep sadness I must convey news of the passing of Darrell Tingley, former CUPW President and lifelong union activist. From a very early age Brother Tingley committed his life to further the struggle of postal workers and the Canadian and international working class.

Inspiring a New Generation of Activists

Monday May 24 2021
On this day a year ago, CUPW, and the labour movement as a whole, lost an activist, a mentor, a trailblazer, and a friend. Megan Whitfield was a long-time postal worker and labour activist who dedicated her life to improving the lives of working people. She was a dynamic and fearless leader who was at the forefront of many struggles, including pay equity and health and safety improvements.

Megan Whitfield embodied all of these characteristics and so much more, and the void her passing has left at CUPW, and within the labour movement, will never be fully filled.

The Union has lost another fighter; comrade; brother. Dave Stutt, a tireless advocate and activist who stood up for his fellow sisters and brothers throughout his career, has passed.

We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Brother Bob White. Bob was a passionate defender of the working class throughout his life. CUPW owes him a debt of gratitude for the role he played, as head of the Canadian Labour Congress, in helping our union win employee status and a collective agreement for over 6000 Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers. We shall forever be grateful for his assistance and support.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

After pressing the Employer to come back to the bargaining table early last week, we received a response from Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger on Friday evening, just hours after we posted Bulletin 128, “CUPW is Waiting for Canada Post.” In his letter, Mr. Ettinger stuck to the lines we’ve heard from Canada Post for many months now.

A week ago, CUPW members spoke loudly and rejected what Canada Post called its “best and final” offers. The goal of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers remains negotiating ratifiable collective agreements which meet postal workers’ needs, help grow the current services provided by a public post office and to better serve Canadians with new services.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
