On behalf of six Canadian labour unions representing over 2 million workers, we are writing to raise concern about the recent announcement by the Government of Canada to suspend funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the primary aid agency for Palestinian refugees in Gaza and throughout the region. In the interest of safety and security for millions of Palestinians, we request that you reverse this decision.

Over 10, 000 people - including thousands of children – have been killed since violence began in Israel and Palestine on October 7, 2023, and the death toll continues to rise as the war enters its second month. CUPW condemns the targeting, kidnapping and killing of innocent civilians and calls on the Canadian Government to demand an immediate ceasefire.

CUPW welcomes developments in Palestine where international pressure has resulted in an unconditional ceasefire after 11 days of relentless attacks on Palestinians by Israel. The disproportionate use of modern weaponry against the citizens of Gaza is ongoing state terrorism directed at the people of Palestine. The whole world watched as air strikes and guided missiles destroyed buildings, homes, and medical facilities.

For Immediate Release - Ottawa - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is pleased to announce its support of the 2018 Freedom Flotilla Coalition as it challenges the illegal and inhumane blockade of Gaza. At its most recent meeting, the National Executive Board adopted a resolution in support of Brother Ron Rousseau’s participation in the Canadian Boat to Gaza.
Wednesday May 30 2018
The events in Gaza in recent weeks have left no one indifferent. Even Prime Minister Trudeau felt compelled to ask for an independent investigation of the situation in Gaza. Canada is complicit in these crimes, supplying Israel with weaponry used to kill civilians and to maintain an illegal occupation of Palestine. Further, Canada just expanded a free trade deal with the Israeli regime. We must continue to generate and stimulate debate through concrete solidarity actions. We need to remain active.
Tuesday May 15 2018
Dear Mr. Marouf; On behalf of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the Palestine Postal Service Workers’ Union, I am writing recognize the Nakba commemoration of May 15 and extend our hope that the Palestinian people and nation will finally receive the human and social justice so deserved. We regret any Canadian support, either directly or through silence, about the ongoing atrocities occurring on your occupied lands. We cannot condone any support for a regime of hatred based on continuing land theft and human rights abuses. In reality, the Nakba has never really ended.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

A week ago, CUPW members spoke loudly and rejected what Canada Post called its “best and final” offers. The goal of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers remains negotiating ratifiable collective agreements which meet postal workers’ needs, help grow the current services provided by a public post office and to better serve Canadians with new services.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
