In order for over-age dependants to qualify for benefits, the member must provide to Great West/Canada Life a document from a post-secondary institution as proof that the dependant is attending school on a full-time basis. Due to the pandemic, full-time students may be running into restrictions with their post-secondary institution and course offerings which prevent them from qualifying for benefits.

On June 11, 2020, Arbitrator MacPherson ordered that all continuous service of the RSMCs since they became employees on January 1, 2004 be recognized for the right to post-retirement benefits.

On June 11, 2020, Arbitrator MacPherson imposed wage increases for the four (4) years of both urban and RSMC collective agreements of 2%, 2%, 2.5% and 2.9%. Retirees who worked at CPC after February 1st, 2018 for Urban and after January 1st, 2018 for RSMCs are also entitled to retroactivity on all the time paid after these dates as the case may be.

The Short Term Disability Plan (STDP) is a 30-week program. As per article 20.10 (g) of the Urban Collective Agreement and article 30.10 (f) of the Rural Suburban Mail Carriers Collective Agreement, at week 16, you have to apply for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Yesterday, August 20, CUPW’s Negotiating Committees returned to the bargaining table to present comprehensive global offers for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units. While we had planned to meet again tomorrow, Canada Post has told us today that it needs more time to review our offers.
