Conciliation ended on Friday, June 10, 2016. Despite seven months of negotiations and 60 days of conciliation involving intensive negotiations, we are still without a new collective agreement for urban and RSMC members.

Summer is here, the season of Pride in communities all over! CUPW stands in solidarity with Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transsexual-Transgender-Queer struggles for human rights. Pride events began as an expression of the fight for dignity and equality — a refusal to be silenced. These struggles are not over – as we are reminded every day in the news. We've seen important progress toward equity in the past year, but there is much yet to accomplish.

At the beginning of negotiations, we presented our demands of special relevance to Groups 3 and 4 members. These included the creation of a new classification for heavy duty vehicle mechanics, protections from the use of Maximo for the purposes of discipline, and a special pay adjustment for all Group 3 and 4 members. For their part Canada Post management submitted a number of demands concerning the work of Groups 3 and 4 members. Most significantly CPC proposed that all plant maintenance workers be scheduled for twelve (12) hour shifts and all members would be required to work on every weekend. Also CPC proposed new job descriptions and statements of qualifications and the elimination of the apprenticeship program.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Maintair workers in Thunder Bay will soon be voting on their first collective agreement. The bargaining committee recently reached a tentative agreement with the employer which provides significant wage increases over the duration of the agreement.

The Union received a notice from Canada Post on May 1, 2024, indicating its’ intent to “standardize” the approach for employees who submit their notice of retirement or resignation to the Corporation. “…once the Corporation has received a retirement or resignation notice from an employee, it will be considered final unless there are circumstances of an exceptional nature…”

Canada Post Creating Confusion - On May 29th, in front of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (OGGO), Canada Post Corporation CEO, Doug Ettinger, was questioned about the future of the Corporation. When asked about alternate day delivery, he firmly stated that it’s “not on the table.” He even emphasized that to remain competitive, “we need seven-day delivery.”

As we try to survive a broken world, the summer Solstice is an opportune time to reflect on the possibilities for a better, more sustainable home. A key to our wellness is to multiply connections with each other and also, with the natural world.

CUPW's National Executive Board and the Negotiations Committee met with Canada Post on Thursday, May 16 to discuss the Corporation’s 2023 Annual Report. Canada Post Corporation repeated what it had already told CUPW negotiators last week: that it is not interested in alternate day delivery. Canada Post continues to give us one story, and the public and media another.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
