In early June, senior Canada Post Corporation representatives approached CUPW with a proposal to extend the current collective agreements by two years and provide a 2% increase in wages. They stated that the uncertainty of the recovery from the pandemic would make our upcoming negotiations extremely difficult. We are still working with Canada Post on the Article 35.08 review, as it is still not complete. While monitoring the review, it has come to our attention that some errors occurred when supervisors were inputting acting assignments as they were inputting these as promotions. This would have a negative impact for our members as it would change the members anniversary date for the annual pay increment and may wrongfully create an overpayment situation.

Recently, Canada Post has spoken out about the importance and potential benefits of expanding its financial services to the public and small businesses. CUPW welcomes this new direction because we know that service expansion is needed to maintain good jobs, and to promote increased financial inclusion and better access to services.

This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Special Needs Project. This is covered under Appendix L in our collective agreement. Appendix L was hard fought for and has helped many postal workers who have children with different abilities. Over 1800 members and their families have benefited from this. I do not believe any other union in Canada has such comprehensive benefits as we have.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day - Every year we encourage all members to honour this day with deference and solidarity. This year, given the recent discovery of a mass grave of 215 Indigenous children found at a former Kamloops residential school, we must also honour our revived outrage at the ongoing violence of colonialism.

June marks the beginning of Pride Season – a time of community, education, and of course, celebration. But the story of Pride is so much bigger than rainbows and parades. It’s important to remember that Pride started as a riot – a rebellion against the discrimination of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) people. And this community continues to be at the forefront of the civil rights and social movements today.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Founded in 2011 by Paul and Raven Lacerte, the Moose Hide Campaign began as a grassroots initiative along British Columbia’s Highway of Tears—a region marked by the tragic disappearance and murder of many Indigenous women and girls. The campaign encourages men and boys, alongside all Canadians, to commit to ending gender-based violence.
