This week, Parliament of Canada reconvenes for a new session. The new session will begin by our Governor General’s speech from the throne. The speech is pronounced by the Governor General but it represents the new agenda and priorities of the government. The speech is then submitted to a vote, and after debate, must be adopted by Parliament.

This letter was went to all federal political parties -- Dear, The Canadian Union of Postal Workers represents about 60,000 workers across every region of our country. The majority of our members work at Canada Post, but we also represent workers in the private sector; including couriers, cleaners and first responders. In short, our union represents the vital frontline workers that never stopped working during this COVID crisis.

The emergence of COVID-19 was first identified on 30 December 2019 and declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020. Before the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, global emissions of carbon dioxide were rising by about 1% per year during the previous decade. But as a result of the shut-down of many economies worldwide, CO2 emissions during the COVID-19 pandemic have been reduced from between 17 and 22% globally. This shows that even a temporary slowdown in industry can result in a positive effect on the environment.

We must continue to demand governments and employers move towards social and ecological sustainability, where all are considered and cared for fairly– a way of living collectively where resources are shared in an equitable, peaceful and sustainable way.

Earth Day has been observed around the world for 50 years each April 22. CUPW and its members are proud to stand for the rights of workers and their loved ones. In the past, CUPW and its allies have made it clear that we are at a crossroads: our climate must be a priority. We cannot let our planet be exploited and destroyed anymore.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Today, September 15, postal workers across the country are escalating their strike action against Canada Post. As of 12:01 am local time, postal workers will neither process nor deliver unaddressed flyers (Neighbourhood Mail). As of the same time, we have lifted our national overtime ban.

Over a month ago, postal workers soundly rejected Canada Post’s offers in a government-forced vote. The Corporation’s plan to bypass the Union and impose rollbacks on us failed. With the Corporation’s offers rejected by the membership, the only way to settle this dispute is at the bargaining table and the Employer changing its positions.

The Federal mediators advised us that Canada Post has cancelled today’s (August 25) planned meeting. The Corporation says it needs more time to review our latest global offers. We are expecting to receive more questions from Canada Post about our offers through the Federal mediators.
