    Happy New Year! Together, our collective strength has seen us through another year. Looking back, as the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, we’re proud of our accomplishments in 2022 especially given all the challenges of still being in a pandemic world, global injustices, growing inequality.

    We join many others in celebrating Justice Koehnen’s decision that strikes down the Ontario government's Bill 124, which imposed 1% wage restraints on provincial public-sector workers. The decision finds the law unconstitutional, and that its sole intent was to violate collective bargaining rights, therefore the law has been struck down in its entirety.

    We’re almost halfway through 2022, but it has already been another busy year for CUPW, with no signs of stopping. While our provinces and cities lift COVID restrictions and the world begins to reopen, the pandemic continues to cause uncertainty and we must continue to respect each other. We’ll soon be able to meet in person as the National Executive Board just lifted the travel ban, but let’s be mindful that we’ve all experienced the pandemic differently and have different comfort levels with the removal of restrictions.

    This Thursday, September 30, will mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday to commemorate the tragic legacy of residential schools in our country. The day coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which started in 2013, to honour Indigenous children forced to leave their families to attend residential schools. On this day, people wear orange shirts in honour of Phyllis Webstad, whose treasured new orange shirt was taken from her when she was brought to a residential school.

    Dear Members, The federal election campaign is coming to an end in less than a week, as we head to the polls on Monday, Sept. 20. It has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone. As the fourth wave of COVID-19 escalates and kids return to school, many are frustrated with this election call. And with good reason. Nevertheless, our voices will be heard to decide the right direction for the country. I encourage all members to learn about the different party platforms and candidates. Having the right representation makes a difference in our members' lives. What political parties put forward during this campaign is important, but we will not forget their track record to assess the credibility of their commitments. As the saying goes: History tends to repeat itself. Therefore, we must look at how political parties have addressed workers issues in the past. Here’s a brief summary of the main federal political parties positioning in recent years. I hope that this additional information will be helpful when you cast your vote. Remember who is on our side. If you haven’t done so yet, I urge you to exercise your democratic right to vote on Monday, September 20.

    June 27, 2021 marks 10 years since Stephen Harper’s Federal Conservative Government forced postal workers back to work, stripping us of our right to free and fair collective bargaining and our right to strike. Anniversaries are most often happy occasions, marked with celebrations and gifts. Typical 10-year anniversary gifts are metals or gemstones. But postal workers will mark the 2011 back-to-work legislation with collective determination and solidarity, and a vow to keep fighting for worker rights.

    Two years ago today, we opened the 2019-2023 CUPW National Convention, and less than a week later, I was elected CUPW National President. It has been the most exciting and amazing time, but also stressful and sometimes scary. Every day, I am reminded what an honour and a privilege it is to lead this Union and to work with so many incredible and dedicated people.

    Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

    Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

    Deadline to apply: September 14, 2025 - Labour College, the Canadian Labour Congress’ (CLC) flagship trade union leadership development program, is a unique learning opportunity for union leaders and active members to learn new skills and take on the challenges that face the labour movement. It provides university level courses on issues related to work and the rights of workers in Canada. It gives graduates the necessary tools to be effective leaders in their union, their labour council, and the wider labour movement for the benefit of all workers.

    The RSMC and Urban Bargaining Committees have unanimously recommended that ALL members decisively reject Canada Post’s “final” offers. At the National level, the National Executive Board is unanimous in its recommendation to reject the offers. The vast majority of your elected Union representatives from across the country also agree: the Employer’s May 28 offers do not meet our needs and must be rejected.

    We have heard that some members are unhappy with the overtime ban strike activity, so we want to help clarify the situation. Your National Executive Board (NEB) decided on this action after hearing feedback about loss of income in the 2024 strike, other input, and debate about strategy. While every member does not work overtime, taking this action means every member will still receive their regular pay. The negotiations demands ratified by members include staffing of positions where overtime and temporary hours are extreme or abusive. This includes adding more permanent positions in Group 1 and properly building routes in Group 2.

    Take one look at our collective agreements and you will see what we have gained by being united and supporting each other. In the 1960s, male workers supported the struggle for equal pay for female workers in the same classification. We were successful in 1970.

    It is with great disappointment that we received yesterday a “bottom-line” decision from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) dismissing the Unfair Labour Practice (ULP) that we filed on June 3rd, 2025. This “bottom-line” decision was issued by the CIRB given the upcoming votes and the CIRB will issue full reasons at a later date.

    As per our previous bulletin, CUPW members continue to raise serious concerns about the email sign-up process being conducted by Canada Post on behalf of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). According to the CIRB, this is being done: “To ensure receipt of your PIN necessary to vote, by email, the Board is requesting that everyone update their email address... The deadline to update your email address is Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (ET).” The Union has asked for an extension, but we do not yet know if one will be granted. We are concerned that Canada Post is focused on speed rather than ensuring members get access to vote.

    CUPW members have always had a voice. Canada Post is acting like you don’t by saying this vote provides you with an opportunity to have a voice. But this forced vote is an attack against CUPW’s right and ability to represent you and it violates our long-standing democratic processes that were created by CUPW members just like you.

    Yesterday July 2, hearings for our unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post started at the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). Hearings continued today, July 3. Our complaint is under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. Yesterday, we brought evidence to the CIRB to show that Canada Post has chosen to bargain directly with members and undermine the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights, all while trying to discredit the Union’s reputation.

    On June 30 1981, CUPW members from sea to sea to sea went on a nationwide strike. One of the main issues in the strike was a maternity leave top up –or paid maternity leave so that women would not lose money when they took leave to have children.

    We have received a number of concerns from members who are trying to update their email addresses for the so-called final offer vote. It has only been one day since we received that directive from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).
