Monday November 18 2019
We have now completed 35 days of hearings. There are 4 dates scheduled for December; 3rd, 6th, 19th and 20th. Canada Post has used 15 hearing dates so far. When the Arbitrator asked about how much longer they need to complete their case, the answer from their counsel was vague. He never really answered the question but stated they think they have 3 or 4 more witnesses to go.

In our June 28 bulletin (bulletin # 082), we explained that in the current round of negotiations, the parties (CUPW and CPC) agreed to amend some provisions and classifications related to groups 3 and 4.

After hearings on October 23 and 30, we have now completed 34 days of arbitration.
Thursday October 17 2019
We continued with our busy arbitration schedule by completing 8 days of hearings in the last three weeks. We have now completed 32 days of hearings. We presented our entire case in 20 days, which included hearing evidence and the cross-examination of 28 witnesses. So far Canada Post has used 12 days of hearings and we have heard evidence from 3 witnesses. They still have their fourth witness on the stand and have at least 3 more witnesses to go after that.

Arbitration resumed on September 26 with a very intense schedule. There are 8 days of hearings scheduled over a three week period. Canada Post continued presenting its evidence.
Friday August 30 2019
After a brief break, due to scheduling conflicts of all parties involved, the interest arbitration resumed on August 20, 2019 and continued for four consecutive days. Canada Post began with a lengthy opening statement and then began presenting its evidence.
Thursday August 29 2019
Arbitration hearings resumed last week after a six-week hiatus, due to the availability of the arbitrator and counsel, with Canada Post presenting its evidence for the first time.
Friday July 5 2019
We have signed two memorandums of agreement (MOA) with Canada Post that define the timelines to implement the language that has been agreed to and signed during this round of negotiations. We also signed a MOA that will update all expiry dates in the Urban collective agreement to the date of signing of the new collective agreement.

Union Completes Evidence - Day 20 started with the cross examination of Nancy Beauchamp, Chief Negotiator RSMC. She reaffirmed the reasons why we must have language, in the collective agreement, to maintain Pay Equity.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

The Education Department held a Symposium for CUPW facilitators from September 12 – 15, 2024. In total, 90 people took part, including participants (CUPW worker educators), Regional Education and Organizing Officers (REOOs), Union Reps (URs), staff, those facilitating sessions, guest speakers, and our 2nd National Vice-President, Coleen Jones.

The public post office distributes government cheques that are a vital part of the social safety net. We do not want pensioners and people who rely on government assistance to suffer if the Union is locked out or forced to strike. The most vulnerable members of our society should not be caught in the crosshairs of our contract dispute with Canada Post. In addition, we want to make sure that live animals are not trapped in the mail system during a work disruption.

On several occasions at the negotiation table, Canada Post has referred to the language in our Collective Agreement as NOISE!
In the Employer’s view, there is “too much noise” in the Collective Agreement and they have made it clear during this round that they wish for it to be silenced.

As part of the 2021 contract renewal, CUPW and CPC agreed to transition RSMCs to an hourly rate of pay system dependent on a new way to assess workload and work content. Any issues outstanding were to be dealt with during this round of negotiations.
