A date for the retroactive payment of wages based on the Pay Equity Award for RSMCs has been set. Canada Post was targeting to have the payment out some time in the summer. We have been informed that the retro payment is planned for the June 13th pay.

Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers Ruled Equal to Letter Carriers in Landmark Pay Equity Case - Ottawa – Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) earned a long-awaited victory, as an arbitrator ruled they do work of equal value to urban letter carriers and that there is a wage gap between the two groups. Arbitrator Maureen Flynn also rejected how Canada Post assessed RSMC compensation, accepting instead the methodology presented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

The pay equity arbitration hearings are over and we are now waiting for arbitrator Flynn to render her decision. She has informed the parties that we can expect a decision within 30 days.

Late last year, Canada Post requested to the Pay Equity arbitrator that their consultant should be allowed to write another report, they had said the reason for this request is that they had listen to the Union’s concerns. Arbitrator Flynn agreed and after an additional delay, ordered Canada Post to submit this second report by January 24th, 2018.

This week, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued notice to bargain to Canada Post for both of our major bargaining units. After years of raucous labour-relations, attacks from government and violations of our constitutional right to free collective bargaining, there are many issues that must be resolved. The Urban Operations unit and the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers unit will again meet the employer as one committee. Rural-Urban solidarity is key to achieving our demands.

We have now completed the Focus Groups in our Pay Equity Study. In total we held 47 Focus Groups from the Atlantic to the Pacific. We thank all those members who participated for your valuable contributions.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

The Federal mediators advised us that Canada Post has cancelled today’s (August 25) planned meeting. The Corporation says it needs more time to review our latest global offers. We are expecting to receive more questions from Canada Post about our offers through the Federal mediators.

Yesterday, August 20, CUPW’s Negotiating Committees returned to the bargaining table to present comprehensive global offers for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units. While we had planned to meet again tomorrow, Canada Post has told us today that it needs more time to review our offers.
