    OTTAWA- For several months now, postal workers have been sounding the alarm about slippery gravel scattered by a Canada Post contractor around Orleans mailboxes and they’re not getting any answers, either from Canada Post or from Labour Canada.

    Dear Mr. Chopra, As you are no doubt aware, the city of Fort McMurray has been ravaged by fire. Many have lost everything. As people begin to return to their homes, the relief effort will turn to a rebuilding effort. We are heartened to hear that the post office is still intact. We would like you to consider how Canada Post can be used to aid in the relief effort. We are aware of unused trucks sitting in Edmonton which could be immediately deployed for logistical support. In addition, we believe Canada Post could provide free shipping to Fort McMurray of for a period of months following the fire.

    The unions representing Canada’s postal workers are rolling out a new social media campaign this week to convince the public and the Liberal government to bring back postal banking.     Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

    Today – Friday August 2 – the Union filed two “Notices of Dispute” with the Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon. The National Executive Board did not take this decision lightly. The parties have been bargaining since November, but little progress has been made on the Union's key issues. The Employer has given us no sign it will drop any of its major rollbacks or demands for a widening two-tier workforce. Additionally, the employer has not yet made a wage offer.

    The Union received a notice from Canada Post on May 1, 2024, indicating its’ intent to “standardize” the approach for employees who submit their notice of retirement or resignation to the Corporation. “…once the Corporation has received a retirement or resignation notice from an employee, it will be considered final unless there are circumstances of an exceptional nature…”
