Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers make 25% less than their Urban Male Counterparts at Canada Post - OTTAWA - Hearings begin next week into the largest active pay equity case in Canada. At the end of collective bargaining in 2016, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post reached a separate agreement to expedite the pay equity process for Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC).

Media Release - OTTAWA – Door-to-door protected for millions, but fight to restore the cuts carries on. This morning, after a year of review and another year of delays, the federal government finally made public its vision for a renewed Canada Post. Some four million households can now rest easy that their door-to-door service will not be cut, but more than 800,000 are still out in the cold.

Despite considerable media coverage about the difficulty of finding licensed child care spaces, most prospective parents wait far too long before trying to apply for one. Many parents don’t think about their child care arrangements until late into their pregnancy or well into their maternity/parental leave. To better understand how parents learn about child care and how best to get information into their hands early CUPW partnered with the Child Care Resource and Research Unit (CRRU) to survey CUPW members who were on maternity/parental leave. We gained a number of insights into the best ways to communicate with members and about the kind of information they need. We learned word of mouth (family, friends and coworkers) is one of the main sources of information. So too is social media. Members also want information about how to apply for child care and about government fee subsidies. Many members talked about wanting to better understand their rights and the process to apply for EI maternity/parental leave, work accommodation and other work/life balance issues. These findings will help inform the work of the CUPW Child Care Fund over the coming months and years.

This paper is the latest in a series of annual survey reports that track child care fee subsidy rates across the country. Time Out 2017 follows three earlier surveys: The Parent Trap (2014), They Go Up So Fast (2015) and A Growing Concern (2016). The data shows that policy matters when it comes to parental fees with provinces providing operational funding consistently showing the lowest fees. Without doubt, child care fees in most of Canada are far too expensive for many. While the ongoing child care fee data is filling an important gap, fees are only part of the puzzle of how parents are coping with finding care for their children.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

On November 12, 2024, Canada Post served the Union with a 72- hour notice of lockout. This notice takes effect as of November 15, 2024, at 8:00 am (EST). The Corporation claims to be committed to reaching negotiated collective agreements, but its actions show otherwise.

Today, your National Executive Board issued what is known as a “72-hour strike notice” to Canada Post for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units. This means that we will be legally allowed to strike as of Friday, November 15 if negotiated settlements have not been reached. Although we’ve given notice to Canada Post, the National Executive Board has not yet determined whether job action will take place immediately. It will depend on Canada Post’s actions at the bargaining table in the days to come.

Let’s Tell Canada Post to Negotiate Fair Collective Agreements - Media Advisory - OTTAWA - For nearly a year, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has been bargaining with Canada Post for fair wages, safe working conditions, the right for all workers to retire with dignity and the expansion of public postal services for all communities. Throughout this process, Canada Post has not dropped its proposed rollbacks and is asking for many of our major issues to be resolved through arbitration instead of at the bargaining table.

As you've likely seen online or heard from the Employer, Canada Post presented two comprehensive offers to CUPW negotiators between 18:00h and 19:00h (EST) last night. Each offer came in a 3-inch binder and contained proposed language that Canada Post wants included in a new collective agreement. The negotiators were given only a brief overview of these offers.
