We all have known for six months that this day would come. Many CUPW members and their families have already made the difficult decision to send their children back to school in the coming weeks. For months, we have also known what would be required to keep everyone safe within the public education ecosystem. We applaud the heroic efforts of teachers and education workers, custodians, staff, bus drivers, progressive trustees and boards of education, boards of health and health care workers who are all doing their best – under extremely difficult circumstances – to get things ready for our children. Despite these efforts, many governments have simply not done enough to help ensure the best possible #SafeSeptember.

Representing the over 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, we salute again the remarkable humanitarian solidarity exhibited by scores of Cuban medical workers serving humanity selflessly all over the planet. For over 60 years, Cuban medical brigades have provided care to some of the most marginalized with altruistic humanity. In particular, we recognize the Henry Reeve Contingent founded by late President of the Cuban Republic, Fidel Castro Ruz “with the purpose of saving lives in times of disasters, epidemics, pandemic and other events that require Cuban medical and paramedical health.”

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, representing 56,300 members condemns the in-custody execution of Soleiman Faqiri and joins the call for full transparency, accountability, and justice for his family. Mr. Faqiri, a man with schizophrenia, loved and supported by his family, and deserving of and requiring medical attention, was placed in segregation where he was brutally beaten and tortured. He was shackled and pepper sprayed with at least six armed guards present. That Mr. Faqiri was beaten is not in dispute. That he is dead as a result isn’t either. A coroner’s report revealed more than 50 signs of “blunt impact trauma” on his body, including on his neck, at the time of his death.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) represents over 50,000 postal workers, cleaners, food couriers, drivers, vehicle mechanics, warehouse workers, printers, and emergency and medical dispatchers across Canada. We commend you for your bold act of solidarity and wish to let you know that CUPW stands behind the Movement for Black Lives and all workers who will be striking on Monday, July 20, to fight for an end to systemic racism, white supremacy, and for justice for workers of colour.

In the wake of a number of murders committed by police in the United States and Canada, CUPW joins an ever-important number of voices that are calling to DEFUND THE POLICE. While attention about the senseless police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis featured widely in Canadian media, Black and Indigenous people in Canada were also killed at the hands of the police.

Over 50 years ago, American Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King said, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” This quote explains and underscores what we are seeing in the media in response to the police killing of a Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is saddened and outraged by the recent violent attacks against Black individuals regionally, nationally and internationally. We are also deeply concerned that last week Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a Black-Indigenous woman, fell more than 20 floors to her death while members of the Toronto police force were present.

As provided for in the National Constitution under sections 4.96 to 4.99, we have completed an examination of the financial transactions of the Union for the period of July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers commend the land defenders in Wet’suwet’en territory for their brave and noble stand against greed and destruction. We condemn the RCMP for trespassing on unceded territory and intimidating land defenders there. Costal Gaslink wants to build a 670 km pipeline through their territories and a pristine wilderness. Once again, land is given away to corporations to enrich shareholders and divide communities.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

A Federal election could be called in the coming weeks. As is the case, CUPW has updated its pre-election report card, grading all federal parties on the issues that are important to CUPW members.

CUPW negotiators met with Canada Post, March 1 – 2, to resolve our bargaining dispute and achieve new collective agreements for the Urban and RSMC units.
CUPW came to the bargaining table prepared to negotiate collective agreements that will benefit postal workers and strengthen the public post office for generations to come. The Union offered meaningful proposals to help Canada Post expand into weekend parcel deliveries, while protecting full-time jobs. However, the Corporation continued to push for serious rollbacks that would gut our agreements, explode part-time and temporary work, and undermine our full-time jobs.

OTTAWA– Tomorrow, CUPW and Canada Post will be meeting in Ottawa for two days to resume Negotiations.
CUPW is trying to negotiate new collective agreements for both Urban and Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) bargaining units which will both benefit postal workers and strengthen our public post office - now and for future generations.

This weekend, March 1 and 2, CUPW and Canada Post negotiators will reconvene in Ottawa to resume bargaining and trying to secure new collective agreements for Urban and RSMC units.
