After a card signing campaign and lengthy process at the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has been certified as the sole and exclusive bargaining agent for the Adecco workers at the Custom and Postal Import Program (CPIP). On July 6, 2012 the CIRB issued a bargaining certificate ordering the CUPW to be the bargaining agent for the unit comprising; “all employees of Adecco Employment Services Limited working at the Customs Postal Import Program, excluding casuals, supervisors and those above the rank of supervisor.” On July 31, 2012 the Union served notice to bargain to Adecco for a first collective agreement.

APPLICATIONS FOR CERTIFICATIONS - TNT Express The certification application of TNT Express - Ottawa is facing a lot of challenges from the employer and now we know why. United Parcel Service (UPS) will pay $6.85 billion for Dutch peer TNT Express in a deal making the world's largest package delivery company the market leader in Europe. UPS will also get access to TNT's stronger networks in the fast-growing Asian and Latin American markets, bringing the U.S. company's global sales up to over 45 billion euros.

Our public post office is responsible for distributing government cheques that are a fundamental part of what we call the social safety net. The CUPW does not want to see pensioners and people with low income suffer in the event that the union is forced to strike. After all, any dispute over contract issues should be directed at Canada Post, not the most vulnerable members of society. The union has therefore negotiated an agreement with Canada Post to distribute pension and social assistance cheques in the event of a work disruption. The agreement is virtually identical to the agreement used in 1997 and the agreement negotiated but not used in 2003.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

If necessary, as per the provisions of section 3.35 of the National Constitution, an election will be held by means of a virtual platform at simultaneous meetings on Friday, May 6, 2022.

On September 13, 2021, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee responsible for the transition to an hourly rate for RSMCs. We need union representatives to sit on this committee.

Canada Post Corporation has advised CUPW of an intention to discontinue access to High-Risk Leave provisions for members starting February 21, 2022. The Corporation advised members in writing in January; some members may have already received a letter. CPC’s position is that members who have a condition preventing them from coming back to work should apply for other types of leave. CUPW disagrees with the Corporation’s intent to unilaterally cancel the leave and recommends that members who may be affected file grievances, both for the cancellation of the High-Risk Leave and/or the denial of other forms of leave.

Due to recent increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for RSMCs will generate a COLA payment for the period of October 1 to December 31, 2021.

On January 18, the second arbitration hearing was held on the merit of our grievance against Canada Post Corporation’s (CPC) mandatory vaccination practice. On January 10, we filed all our evidence in 10 affidavits. One affidavit was from the undersigned, one from our expert witness, one from our National President, Jan Simpson, and there are seven other affidavits from members who have experienced hardship because of the vaccination practice.

The National Executive Board has passed a motion to reimburse Locals for half the cost of providing N95 or equivalent masks for members to wear at work. Following the recent conflicts between members who wish to provide their own N95 masks and their supervisors, CUPW has decided to be more proactive about face coverings. We must continue to do all we can to prevent spread of the Coronavirus-19 in our workplaces.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
