We are over halfway through Black History Month (BHM). I know many members are supporting and participating in local BHM events and celebrations. For those who aren’t, there is still time. Events continue in your community throughout the month and I encourage you to get involved.

We join many others in celebrating Justice Koehnen’s decision that strikes down the Ontario government's Bill 124, which imposed 1% wage restraints on provincial public-sector workers. The decision finds the law unconstitutional, and that its sole intent was to violate collective bargaining rights, therefore the law has been struck down in its entirety.

The Canada Post Defined Benefit Pension plan covers all permanent full and part time letter carriers, MSCs, clerks, RSMCs (who have routes over 12 hours a week), clerks, mail handlers, dispatchers, technical services, and RSMC Permanent Relief.In a limited number of situations, it covers temporary Urban Operations workers who are covering a single known in advance assignment of six months or more.

We’re almost halfway through 2022, but it has already been another busy year for CUPW, with no signs of stopping. While our provinces and cities lift COVID restrictions and the world begins to reopen, the pandemic continues to cause uncertainty and we must continue to respect each other. We’ll soon be able to meet in person as the National Executive Board just lifted the travel ban, but let’s be mindful that we’ve all experienced the pandemic differently and have different comfort levels with the removal of restrictions.

This Thursday, September 30, will mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday to commemorate the tragic legacy of residential schools in our country. The day coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which started in 2013, to honour Indigenous children forced to leave their families to attend residential schools. On this day, people wear orange shirts in honour of Phyllis Webstad, whose treasured new orange shirt was taken from her when she was brought to a residential school.

Dear Members,
The federal election campaign is coming to an end in less than a week, as we head to the polls on Monday, Sept. 20. It has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone. As the fourth wave of COVID-19 escalates and kids return to school, many are frustrated with this election call. And with good reason.
Nevertheless, our voices will be heard to decide the right direction for the country.
I encourage all members to learn about the different party platforms and candidates. Having the right representation makes a difference in our members' lives.
What political parties put forward during this campaign is important, but we will not forget their track record to assess the credibility of their commitments.
As the saying goes: History tends to repeat itself. Therefore, we must look at how political parties have addressed workers issues in the past.
Here’s a brief summary of the main federal political parties positioning in recent years.
I hope that this additional information will be helpful when you cast your vote. Remember who is on our side.
If you haven’t done so yet, I urge you to exercise your democratic right to vote on Monday, September 20.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) opened the government-imposed vote on Canada Post’s “final” offers today, July 21. Voting will run until 5 pm ET on August 1.
The Union – from the Negotiation Committees to the National Executive Board to many Locals and Elected Union officials across the country – is calling on all members to decisively REJECT these offers.

You may vote anytime from 7:00 a.m. EDT on July 21, 2025, until 5:00 p.m. EDT on August 1, 2025. /
METHOD OF VOTE -
The vote will be conducted by Simply Voting on behalf of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) by Internet and by phone. Eligible voters who have provided an email address to Canada Post will receive a letter by email at 7:00 a.m. EDT on July 21, 2025, from Simply Voting, outlining how to vote and providing a personal identification number (PIN), which is required to cast a vote.

This moment is crucial in our struggle. Canada Post, supported by the Federal Government, is trying to weaken our Union and diminish our bargaining power. On June 12, the Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, took the unprecedented step of forcing us to vote on Canada Post’s so-called “best and final” offers. This action bypasses the bargaining demands that you put forward and ratified, disregards your representation by the negotiation committees, and undermines the very foundation of free and fair collective bargaining.

This round of bargaining is not just about wages or benefits; it’s about protecting the very future of our work. Group 1 workers need to know what’s at stake.
Management has made it clear they want to close corporate retail counters. Canada Post has publicly called for the end of the moratorium on the closure of post offices in rural areas so it can either close or franchise these post offices.

Today, July 16, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) announced that the government-imposed vote on Canada Post’s collective agreements will begin at 7:00 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Monday, July 21, 2025, and will run until 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Friday, August 1, 2025.

On Monday, July 14, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) issued its decision regarding the content of the offers that members will be voting on in the upcoming government-imposed ratification process. Once again, the CIRB has sided with Canada Post.
Tuesday July 15 2025
Immediately following the announcement of the vote results, CUPW will contact management and invite them to return to the bargaining table.
Both sides must make a commitment to stay at the table until we have an agreement.
During negotiations, CUPW will maintain our overtime ban but not take any additional actions such as a rotating or full-scale strike.

Canada Post has launched a massive communications campaign to sell CUPW members on its “best and final offers.” But remember, Canada Post is only highlighting what it wants you to see. The devil is in the details.
Taking a deeper dive into CPC’s offers and comparing its summaries to its proposed collective agreement language, you’ll find that not everything is quite how Management has made it out to be.

Labour College, the Canadian Labour Congress’ (CLC) flagship trade union leadership development program, is a unique learning opportunity for union leaders and active members to learn new skills and take on the challenges that face the labour movement. It provides university level courses on issues related to work and the rights of workers in Canada. It gives graduates the necessary tools to be effective leaders in their union, their labour council, and the wider labour movement for the benefit of all workers.
