Unions can do so much more than negotiate wages and benefits for workers. Thanks to unions, workers enjoy weekends, vacation leave and minimum wage; and of course, one of the historical breakthroughs that CUPW fought for was maternity leave. Unions have defended and implemented initiatives that support families, and improve our quality of life while setting a benchmark for social justice. The Special Needs and Moving On projects are among the most outstanding examples of the way unions improve quality of life for their broader communities.

We are telling Canada Post to come to the table ready to address our demands but we continue to meet unjustified resistance. We are pushing back hard and reminding CPC over and over that our demands are important and must be addressed.

We have been talking about the slow progress and we have mentioned some successes. It is now time for Canada Post to come to the table with the intent of resolving key issues if we are going to have negotiated collective agreements.

The parties are making progress on some issues. We are continuing to meet with Canada Post and remain determined to achieve our goal of negotiated collective agreements.

The parties have been making some progress at the bargaining table, but we still have many key issues that need to be addressed. Will this be the week we start to see movement on the major demands that we still need to achieve? Only time will tell.

At our last meeting with Canada Post, in the presence of the mediators, we continued to discuss various issues. We stressed the need to quickly start addressing our priorities.

We are continuing to meet with Canada Post to attempt to resolve the outstanding issues. We are reviewing those that are close to being resolved and the major ones that must be addressed.

Today we met with the mediators and also with Canada Post management. The Role of the Mediators: Our discussions with the mediators are held on a confidential basis and therefore we cannot provide specific details. However we can say that today, in our discussions with the mediators, we reviewed several issues where the parties are close to an agreement with the exception of one or two aspects. We also identified several other issues which we believe should be placed on the agenda for the parties to negotiate.

Talks are continuing and some progress is being made. Now is the time to send a strong message to Canada Post that we are still ready to negotiate seriously, to get new collective agreements.

We remain committed to the negotiating process and continue to meet with Canada Post and the mediators. We are attempting to move talks forward by discussing issues with little or no monetary impact, but progress is very slow.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Monday October 22 2018
Almost 9,000 postal workers will walk off the job at midnight on Tuesday – For Immediate Release – Ottawa – Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in the Toronto local will head to the picket lines at 12:01 am EDT on Tuesday, October 23, to begin the second day of postal disruptions across the country. Job action will take place in the Greater Toronto Area, (excluding Scarborough) and most of the 905-region.

Today there are thousands of temporary workers at Canada Post. These workers: Remain at the lowest wage rate although they do the same work as regular employees Have no job security Are not covered by the health, dental and sick or disability insurance plans Have no guaranteed hours Cannot plan their future

Historically when CUPW has been on strike, we have entered into picket protocols to allow members of UPCE/PSAC, other unions in postal facilities, and workers such as cleaners and cafeteria staff to go to work. However, these protocols do not cover supervisors, management and other senior-level Canada Post staff. This time around, the signed protocol does not cover members in the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association (CPAA) bargaining unit. They have refused to sign a protocol with CUPW.

If last-minute deals cannot be reached this evening, rotating strikes will begin in four locations Monday morning - For Immediate Release - Ottawa – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) will begin rotating strikes at 12:01 am tomorrow in Victoria (British Columbia), Edmonton (Alberta), Windsor (Ontario), and 1:01 am in Halifax (Nova Scotia). All times listed in local time. The strikes will last for 24 hours with locations striking daily.

Today the Employer responded to a new proposal aimed at achieving our demand to address overburdening. The answer was NO. The injury rate at Canada Post is the highest of all federal industries and 5.4 times higher than the average of the federal sector. The official line of management is “We are not happy with the results. Clearly more work must be done”.

This week’s release of CPC’s 2017 Social Responsibility Report confirms that there is a health and safety emergency at Canada Post! The report reveals that the most serious injuries (full-day lost time injuries) increased 36% last year. In fact the 2017 lost time injury rate was 46% greater than 2015. In the report the Corporation states “We are not happy with the results. Clearly more work must be done”.

Since the Union issued 72-hour strike notice to Canada Post on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, there has been no response from Canada Post. Your negotiating committee is ready, willing and determined to get back to the bargaining table.

Ottawa – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) today gave notices to Canada Post that job action will begin next week if agreements cannot be reached for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining units. If job action is necessary, rotating strikes will begin at 12:01 am, Monday, October 22. Locations have yet to be determined.

Today, your National Executive Board issued what is known as a “72-hour strike notice” to Canada Post for both the RSMC and Urban units. The National Executive Board has decided that the strike will begin on Monday morning, October 22, 2018, at 00:01 should we not have reached negotiated settlements.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
