    SPECIAL STATEMENT REGARDING THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC During the 3rd verification of our 2019-2023 mandate, the National Board of Trustees were once again required to do a virtual verification. While attempts were made by the National Union to provide the Board with all of the necessary documentation needed to complete a thorough verification, there were shortcomings.

    OTTAWA – Gig Workers United and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers condemn Bill 88, passed today by the Ford government, which modifies minimum employment standards for app-based workers.

    OTTAWA – The Ford government introduced legislation yesterday, Bill 88 or the Working for Workers Act, with sub-standard rights and conditions for app-based gig workers. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers sees this legislation as a setback for workers who are organizing to use collective strength to improve their work lives.

    For Immediate Release - OTTAWA - The Ontario Workforce Recovery Advisory Committee today released its anticipated report on the future of work, and as expected, its recommendations call for the creation of a third category of worker that will not have full employee rights and will not be able to legally unionize.

    TORONTO --On October 7, the World Day for Decent Work, app-based delivery workers took to the streets – their workplace – to demand that Ontario #MakeGigWorkDecentWork. While Gig Workers United was rallying at Queen’s Park to promote the Gig Workers’ Bill of Rights — a joint initiative with the Ontario Federation of Labour — at least two banner drops, one on the freeway and one on Kensington Market rooftop, carried the message “Gig work is real work. Make it decent work.”

    Media Release -- OTTAWA -- Today, Canada Post announced new emissions-reduction targets, set through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). According to the Corporation’s Net Zero 2050 Roadmap, “[Canada Post Corporation's] wider responsibility includes the need to address the serious risks that climate change poses to Canada’s environment, people and businesses, including ours.”

    Updating labour policy to ensure that gig workers are given full and equal rights under the law is a pillar that best ensures the vibrancy of the Ontario economy. Our Union has fought for the rights of gig economy and other precarious workers; we are well-placed to state the case for changes to policy and practices that will provide these workers with fair pay and protections. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the moment to opt for justice for frontline workers who are billed “heroes” but who lack the basic protections of regularized employment status, benefits and fair labour practices.

    Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

    Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

    Canada Post put out a message today to all CUPW members in the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers units about benefits coverage and working conditions upon the expiry of the collective agreements on May 22.

    This afternoon, Canada Post negotiators informed CUPW that they were leaving the bargaining table, calling it a “temporary pause,” to put together another set of offers. Canada Post would not provide a date for when the Union will receive these proposals. It could be in a few days; it could be next week. Given the seriousness of the matter, it is reprehensible to keep workers and the public on edge when we should all be focused on negotiating good collective agreements that will benefit workers and grow our public service to meet the needs of all Canadians.

    The Union has been actively pursuing confirmation from Canada Post that it will respect the post-retirement benefits entitlements of retiring members. The Union was looking to confirm that members who retire will be eligible for post-retirement benefits in the event that the retirement would occur during a labour disruption.

    As reported in Negotiations Bulletin #75, CUPW and Canada Post returned to the bargaining table on Wednesday and Thursday this week in Ottawa. The meetings were facilitated by two Mediators from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS) who are very familiar with our file.

And in the month ahead, there is still more to come: a federal election, the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) report, Canada Post’s 2024 annual report, and the end of the extension of our collective agreements. We know members have lots of questions about what is going to happen, especially after the extensions of our collective agreements.
