During the 2018 round of bargaining, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee to review the collective agreement articles concerning Groups 3 and 4. Unfortunately, the project was placed on hold due to the pandemic.

Fuel cost along with all other incurred expenses for RSMCs have been rising consistently all year. The cost of fuel alone has risen by 40 percent since December 2021. RSMCs receive money from Canada Post to pay for the use of their vehicles at a rate set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). That amount is updated yearly and was last updated at the start of 2022 based on prices from November 2021. With this sudden increase in inflation, including the cost of gas, the math no longer makes sense.

For those I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Roland Schmidt and I was elected as your new 3rd National Vice-President (Organizing) this past May. Before my election, I was serving my 2nd term as the Local President of CUPW 730 (Edmonton and affiliates) in Alberta. Since relocating to Ottawa in June, I’ve dedicated my efforts to stabilizing our organizing department and constructing a comprehensive strategic plan that, with broad member support, will revitalize our union and position us to effectively fight to make our jobs better.

On September 13, 2021, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee responsible for the transition to an hourly rate for RSMCs. We are currently seeking an additional Union Representative to fill an upcoming vacancy.

We are pleased to report that this week the Bee-Clean maintenance workers in Dieppe and Saint John NB and St. John’s NL have ratified two new collective agreements with their employer. Union negotiators, including a bargaining unit member, began meeting with Bee-Clean management in February and came to a surprisingly quick tentative agreement. Our demands that were achieved include...

The deadline to apply is April 1st. The Building the Power to Win campaign was launched in February 2021 and is moving at a good pace to continue CUPW’s preparation for mass education and mobilizing in view of the next round of bargaining. In the coming weeks, CUPW will set up a steering committee made up of two members per region, and they will set down the framework to further our efforts. We are at a critical juncture. Fill out this application form in order to be considered for selection as a member of the steering committee.

September 24 marks the Global Climate Strike. This year, organizers are drawing attention to the multiple and overlapping socio-economic crises – racism, sexism, ableism, and class inequality – that intersect and worsen the climate crisis. Organizers are calling on us to “uproot the system” that privileges the rich and powerful at the expense of the rest of us.

These are difficult times: work stress, climate crisis and associated disasters, and the demands of daily life compound each other

As we transition to a post-pandemic world, the importance of income and job security has never been greater. The pandemic resulted in tremendous changes to the courier and postal delivery industry. Parcels increased dramatically while letter mail, advertising mail, and householders declined. Not all the new parcel business went to traditional delivery companies like Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, FedEx, etc. New delivery networks, using companies like Uber expanded, while Amazon started delivering its own parcels in some areas. No one knows what the post pandemic world will look like. Will parcel deliveries decline as shoppers return to the stores? Will advertising mail return? We do not know. But we can say that with the new tentative agreements, our job and income security will not only continue, it will improve.

Thanks to the mobilization of CUPW, the labour movement, our allies and the support of hundreds of municipalities, CPC is finally planning to expand into financial services.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

For Immediate Release – OTTAWA – Some 55,000 postal workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) went on a nationwide strike on Friday, November 15 at 12:01am ET. After a year of bargaining with little progress, postal workers made the difficult decision to strike. Canada Post had the opportunity to prevent this strike, but it has refused to negotiate real solutions to the issues postal workers face every day. Instead, Canada Post left us no choice when it threatened to change our working conditions and leave our members exposed to layoffs.

With the Union issuing a 72-hour strike notice and the Employer issuing a 72-hour lockout notice, members should be aware that Canada Post has stated that as of November 15 at 8 a.m. ET, the collective agreements will no longer apply, and the Corporation will change working conditions. Nonetheless, all postal workers have basic rights under various federal legislation...

    Tuesday November 12 2024
Today, your National Executive Board issued what is known as a “72-hour strike notice” to Canada Post for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units. This means that we will be legally allowed to strike as of Friday, November 15 if negotiated settlements have not been reached. Although we’ve given notice to Canada Post, the National Executive Board has not yet determined whether job action will take place immediately. It will depend on Canada Post’s actions at the bargaining table in the days to come.

Let’s Tell Canada Post to Negotiate Fair Collective Agreements - Media Advisory - OTTAWA - For nearly a year, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has been bargaining with Canada Post for fair wages, safe working conditions, the right for all workers to retire with dignity and the expansion of public postal services for all communities. Throughout this process, Canada Post has not dropped its proposed rollbacks and is asking for many of our major issues to be resolved through arbitration instead of at the bargaining table.

On November 5, 2024, the Negotiators met with Canada Post to present the Union’s second global offer for Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC). Unlike Canada Post’s proposals, our demands offer real solutions: fair wages, health and safety, the right to retire with dignity, and expansion of services at the public post office.
