Dear Members,
The federal election campaign is coming to an end in less than a week, as we head to the polls on Monday, Sept. 20. It has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone. As the fourth wave of COVID-19 escalates and kids return to school, many are frustrated with this election call. And with good reason.
Nevertheless, our voices will be heard to decide the right direction for the country.
I encourage all members to learn about the different party platforms and candidates. Having the right representation makes a difference in our members' lives.
What political parties put forward during this campaign is important, but we will not forget their track record to assess the credibility of their commitments.
As the saying goes: History tends to repeat itself. Therefore, we must look at how political parties have addressed workers issues in the past.
Here’s a brief summary of the main federal political parties positioning in recent years.
I hope that this additional information will be helpful when you cast your vote. Remember who is on our side.
If you haven’t done so yet, I urge you to exercise your democratic right to vote on Monday, September 20.

June 27, 2021 marks 10 years since Stephen Harper’s Federal Conservative Government forced postal workers back to work, stripping us of our right to free and fair collective bargaining and our right to strike. Anniversaries are most often happy occasions, marked with celebrations and gifts. Typical 10-year anniversary gifts are metals or gemstones. But postal workers will mark the 2011 back-to-work legislation with collective determination and solidarity, and a vow to keep fighting for worker rights.

For many people in North America, today is the biggest shopping day of year. On Black Friday, people search for deals, while many workers do their best to accommodate demand. I will not be partaking in Black Friday shopping. Instead, I will remember that two years ago, on November 27, 2018, Prime Minister Trudeau ordered striking postal workers back to work, without any resolution to our issues.

Negotiations have barely started and already, the public attacks on postal workers’ pensions have begun. This week, the National Post ran an op-ed attacking postal workers’ pensions. Terrence Corcoran goes beyond all sane limits, not only painting a biased picture of the pension plan, but in fact blaming postal workers for “concocting” Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s glaring conflict of interest.

It's been a wild ride for the Canadian Union of Postal Workers over the past couple of years. After we mobilized with the public to beat back the Harper Conservatives' planned demolition of door-to-door delivery, our union then faced a tough round of negotiations with the Conservative-appointed managers of Canada Post. At the same time, the newly-elected Liberals began a review of the post office that complicated matters enormously by holding public consultations on the future of the post office at the same time we faced a highly publicized lockout designed to keep everybody's minds on a manufactured crisis and a fabricated 'need' for cuts.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

On July 23, Canada Post shared some information about its “final” offers and the vote that is currently underway with members. Information was shared via email as well as distributed in some workplaces.

Voting on Canada Post’s final offers started on Monday July 21. 55.8% of Urban members and 57.8% of RSMC members have already cast a vote. Voting continues until 5 pm EST on August 1.
The deadline to request a paper copy of Canada Post’s final offers is tomorrow, July 25.
There is still time to vote. It is very important for the voices of all members to be heard and to be counted. Every member's voice and vote makes a difference.

Yesterday, July 21, after the start of the forced vote, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) informed the Union of the process it will put in place to allow members who cannot access online versions of Canada Post’s final offers to request a paper copy.

Rumours and misinformation in the age of social media spread quickly and can be harmful to the membership, especially at a crucial time like this. Voting to reject or accept the Employers’ offer began on July 21st at 7: 00 am and will conclude on August 1st at 5:00 pm ET 2025.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) opened the government-imposed vote on Canada Post’s “final” offers today, July 21. Voting will run until 5 pm ET on August 1.
The Union – from the Negotiation Committees to the National Executive Board to many Locals and Elected Union officials across the country – is calling on all members to decisively REJECT these offers.

METHOD OF VOTE -
The vote will be conducted by Simply Voting on behalf of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) by Internet and by phone. Eligible voters who have provided an email address to Canada Post will receive a letter by email at 7:00 a.m. EDT on July 21, 2025, from Simply Voting, outlining how to vote and providing a personal identification number (PIN), which is required to cast a vote.

This moment is crucial in our struggle. Canada Post, supported by the Federal Government, is trying to weaken our Union and diminish our bargaining power. On June 12, the Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, took the unprecedented step of forcing us to vote on Canada Post’s so-called “best and final” offers. This action bypasses the bargaining demands that you put forward and ratified, disregards your representation by the negotiation committees, and undermines the very foundation of free and fair collective bargaining.

Management has made it clear they want to close corporate retail counters. Canada Post has publicly called for the end of the moratorium on the closure of post offices in rural areas so it can either close or franchise these post offices.

Today, July 16, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) announced that the government-imposed vote on Canada Post’s collective agreements will begin at 7:00 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Monday, July 21, 2025, and will run until 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Friday, August 1, 2025.
