Canada Post has presented two more major rollbacks at the bargaining table that would widen the gap of newer workers’ second-tier status, the rollbacks apply to both RSMC and Urban Units.

On June 11, 2020, Arbitrator MacPherson imposed wage increases for the four (4) years of both urban and RSMC collective agreements of 2%, 2%, 2.5% and 2.9%. Retirees who worked at CPC after February 1st, 2018 for Urban and after January 1st, 2018 for RSMCs are also entitled to retroactivity on all the time paid after these dates as the case may be.

Members of Unifor have occupied the Northstar Aerospace plant in Milton, Ontario. The plant was purchased by Heligear Acquisition Co. in 2012. Heligear intends to move the plant to Chicago, cutting jobs and leaving the workers’ pension with a massive deficit. Unifor members at Northstar have been told their pension will be reduced by 25%. After months of negotiations, Unifor has been forced to take drastic action.

Late last year, the government introduced legislation that attacks the stability of federally-regulated pension plans. Bill C-27 would create a framework for the conversion of defined benefit pension plans into target benefit plans. The bill was met with outrage from the labour movement, as it was introduced without any consultation whatsoever.

Minister Morneau Must Withdraw Bill C-27 - To everyone’s surprise, Minister of Finance Bill Morneau has tabled a bill to establish target benefit pension plans for private sector employers under federal jurisdiction and Crown Corporations. Postal workers are directly affected, and we strongly oppose this Bill.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

After pressing the Employer to come back to the bargaining table early last week, we received a response from Canada Post CEO Doug Ettinger on Friday evening, just hours after we posted Bulletin 128, “CUPW is Waiting for Canada Post.” In his letter, Mr. Ettinger stuck to the lines we’ve heard from Canada Post for many months now.

A week ago, CUPW members spoke loudly and rejected what Canada Post called its “best and final” offers. The goal of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers remains negotiating ratifiable collective agreements which meet postal workers’ needs, help grow the current services provided by a public post office and to better serve Canadians with new services.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
