This morning, CUPW met with Canada Post Corporation and officially served notice to bargain for both the urban operations unit and the RSMC unit.

You had your say on the Program of Demands. Here are the results: Urban Unit Vote: 94.2 % in favour, RSMC Unit Vote: 92.9 % in favour. RSMC members also voted on proposed changes to the calculation of their seniority. The results of this vote are as follows: 85.7 % in favour.

As per Arbitrator Flynn’s order, the Pay Equity Consultants have submitted their reports on October 16th. Paul Durber, the CUPW consultant, has concluded that the work of an RSMC is of equal value to that of the male comparators and that RSMCs (Zone 1) receive direct wages which range from 24% less than letter carriers to 27% less than Mail Service Couriers – Heavy Vehicle. Durber also analyzed the differences that exist due to the additional benefits received by the male comparators.

All members of the committee have now arrived in Ottawa and are hard at work preparing their files and researching our demands for both the RSMC and urban units. The members of the committee understand how important and difficult this round of bargaining will be and are determined and prepared to do what it takes to achieve gains for both bargaining units.

Last year’s negotiations for both Urban and RSMC members were settled with two short-term collective agreements, and very little progress. While we succeeded in temporarily halting the austerity-drive, all of our most substantial issues remain unresolved. Now with the government review of Canada Post finished, and the Liberals still dragging their feet on decisions, we are getting ready to head back to the bargaining table. Nobody should expect an easy round of bargaining.

The National Executive Board has appointed the negotiating committee to represent the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) unit in the 2017-2018

The National Executive Board has selected Sister Nancy Beauchamp, union representative of the Metro-Montreal Region, as Chief Negotiator for the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) unit.

The national executive board has nominated the negotiating committee to represent the Urban Postal Operations (UPO) unit in the 2017-2018 round of bargaining. These 5 members, which include a technical assistant (Brother Stephen Gale) join Brother Sylvain Lapointe, previously announced as chief negotiator for the unit.

In the last round of bargaining with Canada Post Corporation (CPC), our union negotiated the right for carriers to prepare unaddressed admail (aka householders or neighbourhood mail) at the end of the day. In the agreement, as long as the overtime process is respected, supervisors can’t use being on overtime as a reason to deny time for admail preparation. This was to apply to collating admail for all points of call (POC) — including centralized POC — when letter carriers have three or more pieces of admail per POC.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Ottawa – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on Friday August 2nd filed two notices of dispute with the Minister of Labour for its largest bargaining units – Urban Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers.

Today – Friday August 2 – the Union filed two “Notices of Dispute” with the Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon. The National Executive Board did not take this decision lightly. The parties have been bargaining since November, but little progress has been made on the Union's key issues. The Employer has given us no sign it will drop any of its major rollbacks or demands for a widening two-tier workforce. Additionally, the employer has not yet made a wage offer.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has dismissed CUPW’s constitutional challenge against the 2018 back-to-work legislation that ended rotating strikes and imposed interest arbitration on members of our two largest bargaining units – Urban Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers.

Maintair workers in Thunder Bay will soon be voting on their first collective agreement. The bargaining committee recently reached a tentative agreement with the employer which provides significant wage increases over the duration of the agreement.

The Union received a notice from Canada Post on May 1, 2024, indicating its’ intent to “standardize” the approach for employees who submit their notice of retirement or resignation to the Corporation. “…once the Corporation has received a retirement or resignation notice from an employee, it will be considered final unless there are circumstances of an exceptional nature…”
