Postal Workers’ Caravan: Going Coast to Coast to Save Canada Post

For Immediate Release

ST JOHN’S, NFLD – In a giant white RV with “Stop the Cuts – Save Canada Post” splashed across it in bright red, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is taking to the road on a cross-country tour, encouraging people to fight back against cuts to postal service by voting out the Conservatives.

“Our message to Stephen Harper and his Conservatives: you cannot run, you cannot hide from these cuts,” said Mike Palecek, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), speaking at the caravan’s official launching point in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost point.

The tour, crewed by rotating groups of postal workers, will eventually make its way to the West Coast, stopping in workplaces and communities, and holding public meetings along the way.

“People think it’s ridiculous we’re cutting a profitable, trusted public service,” said Palecek. “We need to ‘Stop Harper, Get Informed and Go Vote’,” a message which is prominently displayed on the rear of the vehicle.

Palecek says the response to the Save Canada Post campaign so far has been very positive and the bus will only increase the campaign’s visibility. Motorists honk and heads turn as the RV rolls down the road.

“Everywhere we go, we know that Canadians want to keep their home delivery, they want to keep their money-making post office, and they know it’s the Conservatives that are taking it away.”
