CELEBRATING HINDU HERITAGE MONTH

The month of November was designated as Hindu Heritage Month in 2022 by the Government of Canada. It was established to celebrate and honour the rich and diverse contributions of the Hindu community to the country, the world, and our Union. Hindu Heritage Month serves as a reflection on the values of peace, non-violence, respect for nature, and unity that are core to Hindu teachings. Hindu values consider the entire world a family when they say “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.”

WHAT IS HINDU HERITAGE MONTH?

Hindu Heritage Month was established to recognize and celebrate the profound influence of Hindu culture, traditions, and philosophy. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the history, arts, customs, and practices of Hinduism, which is one of the world's oldest living religions, with a history that spans over 5,000 years.

HOW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HINDU HERITAGE

Throughout the month of November, communities across Canada will host a variety of events, including:

  • Cultural performances:

Showcasing Indian classical dance and music, yoga demonstrations, and traditional attire.

  • Lectures and Discourses:

Discussing Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Upanishads, and Bhagavad Gita, and their modern-day significance.

  • Community service projects:

Highlighting the Hindu principle of Seva (selfless service) through charitable activities aimed at helping those in need.

  • Temple visits:

Welcoming people of all backgrounds to visit Hindu temples, participate in religious ceremonies, and learn about the Hindu values.

THEMES OF THE CELEBRATION

This year's celebration focuses on the following key aspects of Hindu heritage:

  • Yoga and Meditation:

Enriching physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

  • Dharma (righteousness and duty): Encouraging ethical living and a sense of personal responsibility to make the world a better place.
  • Ahimsa (non-violence):

Promoting compassion for all (not only humans but all living creatures) and achieving harmony in society.

WHY CELEBRATE HINDU HERITAGE MONTH IN CANADA?

Canada is home to 830,000 Canadians of a vibrant and diverse Hindu Heritage. Hindu Heritage Month is a time to recognize the contributions of this community in shaping Canadian society and to celebrate the timeless wisdom of Hinduism, which has influenced advancements in philosophy, science, mathematics, art, and literature. By celebrating this heritage, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers fosters inclusivity, mutual respect, and a true understanding of Hindu values and cultural contributions.

Join CUPW in celebrating Hindu Heritage Month this November by learning more about Hinduism and embracing the rich cultural diversity that enhances our Union!
