Canada Post isn’t taking some of our key negotiations issues seriously. We want the Liberal government to use its considerable influence to ensure that a government institution like Canada Post is onside with its objectives of improving pensions, pay equity and public postal service. Dear Minister Foote: We have been informed that the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates will not be accepting submissions when the Committee holds public consultations this fall in connection with the Canada Post Review. As you know, the acceptance of briefs or submissions is normal practice for Committees. Unfortunately, the Standing Committee in question has decided to depart from this practice. It will only conduct e-consultations and hear witnesses in a number of locations. This process will most likely exclude close to 20% of Canadians who do not have access to the Internet (Source: Statistics Canada, 2012).

Dear Mr, Lukiwski: I understand that the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates will hold e-consultations and public hearings in various locations in connection with the Canada Post Review. I also understand it has decided not to accept briefs or submissions, which is normal practice for committees. CUPW would like to request that the Committee reconsider its decision and allow Canadians to make submissions. We believe this would open up the consultations to people who will not be able to participate in the Committee’s main vehicle for input, the online survey. Close to 20% of Canadians do not have access to the Internet (Source: Statistics Canada, 2012).

The federal government appointed an independent task force earlier this year to identify options for the future of Canada Post. It said that everything but postal privatization would be on the table. This fall, a parliamentary committee will be consulting with Canadians on postal service and the options identified by the task force (Note: taskforce report due in September). It will make recommendations to the government by year’s end.

Dear Minister Foote: It is our understanding that the Clerk of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates has asked committee members for witness suggestions for the public consultations being held this fall in connection with the Canada Post Review. It appears that they were asked on July 13th to send suggestions by July 19th. This is not a reasonable amount of time. Also, it is not clear whether anyone other than committee members will be allowed to make witness suggestions.

For Immediate Release - OTTAWA - While pay equity and pensions have grabbed headlines during the current round of bargaining with Canada Post, postal workers say there are other matters on the table, including bringing back postal banking, an idea which has just been rejected by the big bank lobby.

For many years, CUPW has consistently taken the position that the best response to falling mail volumes is to expand into new services which meet the needs of the public and add revenues for Canada Post. Our view is that CPC should expand its existing services such as parcel delivery and direct mail, as well as initiate new services such as postal banking. With the largest vehicle fleet and the most extensive network of retail facilities in the country, there is great potential for growth. Here is how the issues stand at negotiations:

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Today, May 30, CUPW met with Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, and John Zerucelli, Secretary of State for Labour. It was our second meeting with them since they were appointed to their positions after the federal election.
At the meeting, we shared our thoughts and concerns about negotiations and the recent global offers from Canada Post. We were assured that the Minister would continue to play an intermediary role in the bargaining process but will not intervene at this time.

OTTAWA - Canada Post’s plan will result in sweeping changes to our public postal system’s regulatory framework. The Corporation’s most recent contract offers to CUPW don’t drop its proposed rollbacks. When combined, this is sure to result in service and job cuts.

Wildfire season is early again this year. Fires are already raging in the northern part of the Prairies, in some Eastern provinces and in more isolated locations across the country. This is simply a reminder that we need to be ready to respond when such a situation arises again this year. In fact, some communities in Manitoba have received evacuation notices, and it is very likely that others will have to be evacuated over the coming weeks. In some part of Canada, the winter was mild with very little precipitation, increasing the risk of outbreaks. Therefore, we must once again be vigilant and ready to take the necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety.

On May 28, Canada Post released its annual report for 2024. The Corporation posted a loss before tax of $841 million, continuing a pattern of financial losses since 2018. Canada Post puts the blame for the scale of its losses to several factors

Today, May 28, Canada Post presented what it calls its “best and final” offers for both the RSMC and Urban bargaining units.
While Canada Post insists that its offers reflect the Union’s demands from our May 25 proposal, there are almost no changes from what the Employer put forward on May 21. There's no question: Canada Post is not negotiating. Canada Post is playing hardball.

The Union has now heard back from Canada Post through the federal mediators. The Employer has proposed to return to the bargaining table Wednesday (May 28) to provide the Union with a response to our latest proposals.

Union negotiators and the National Executive Board spent the last few days, and nights, reviewing the Employer’s last offers and preparing responses to issues in the offers and issues important to the Union that the Employer failed to acknowledge.
