For Immediate Release MILTON – On the day that the Canadian Postal Service Charter opens up for review, representatives from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and other concerned groups are rallying at Minister Lisa Raitt’s office in Milton to send a strong message to the federal Conservatives that they should be talking to the public about postal service.

Time flies. Cooper was a premature baby born 8 weeks early. It was a hard beginning for the three of us. When he turned 2 years old, his paediatrician suspected some autism tendencies. It was very hard to hear that. We were living in Alberta at that time with no family support but had great co-workers and very understanding managers there. Thank God my request to transfer to Ontario went through and now we have family and friends to support us. Cooper is almost 3.5 years old now. Last August he started nursery school at a very good daycare. The teachers and other specialists told us it would be really beneficial for Cooper to start going full days but we could not afford it. My wife is still trying to find a sustainable job.

The Facts Contrary to what you might have read on social media and elsewhere, the Union is not in consultation with the Corporation to deal with problems, real or imagined, facing the CPC pension plan or the Corporation’s inability to meet its funding obligations. Further, the Union’s participation in the Federal Government’s consultation on Target Benefit Plans in the federal sector is only tangentially connected to our concerns over Canada Post’s plans for our Defined Benefit Plan.

For Immediate Release OTTAWA - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is reacting angrily today to news that the Prime Minister’s office recently researched the privatization of public postal services. “We suspected the Conservatives were interested in privatization all along,” said Denis Lemelin, CUPW National President. “First they convince the public the service is in trouble, and then they sell it out from under us. If privatization happens, the public will lose an important and valuable service. We will not allow this to happen.”

For Immediate Release OTTAWA -- An independent researcher has studied the impact of ending door-to-door postal delivery on vulnerable populations across the country, including seniors, low-income and persons with disabilities, concluding that Canada Post should “take a step back” and look at alternatives to ending door-to-door delivery. “What many of these groups are proposing is that any changes should be done with transparency, active participation and proper public consultation where the lines of communication are open to all parties” said Caryl-Anne Stordy, author of the study, which was commissioned by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

For Immediate Release OTTAWA – A study of banks and payday lending companies in the United States and Canada shows a real need for a postal bank exists, especially in areas where post offices abound but few banks offer their services. The paper, presented at the 22nd Rutgers University Conference on Postal and Delivery Economics, argues that restoring postal banking in the 21st century would help support post offices while offering much-needed financial services and jobs. “Why force people to resort to payday lending and pawn shops when a better option exists?” asked Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. The union has been campaigning for a postal bank.

For Immediate Release OTTAWA - Canada Post’s plan to cut door-to-door delivery is getting the thumbs down from most Canadians, a new poll has found. 60% of respondents to a Stratcom survey* oppose Canada Post’s plan to replace door-to-door delivery with delivery to a community mailbox. "The public outcry began the moment these cuts were announced by Canada Post and approved by the Conservatives," said Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. "'Lawn signs are going up all across the country. People are organizing. Municipalities are taking action."

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Last week, postal workers decisively rejected Canada Post’s “best and final offers” in the government-forced vote. With a turnout of over 80%, nearly 70% of our members told Canada Post, “No, these offers won’t do it!”
Every employer in the Federal and Provincial sector has been watching us. Rejecting these offers was a victory not only for our Union, but for the labour movement as a whole.

Thank you for showing up, for standing together, and for participating in the government forced vote. Regardless of how you voted, your participation was an act of solidarity and strength. And for those who voted to reject the final offers, your decision sent a powerful message: “We know our worth, and we deserve better”.

After almost two weeks of voting, the results are now in: CUPW members in both bargaining units have spoken, and they have rejected Canada Post’s global offers.

We’ve now entered the second and final week of the government-imposed forced vote on Canada Post’s “final” offers. As of July 28, 69 % of Urban members and 71.4 % of RSMC members have already casted their vote. Voting continues until 5 pm EST on August 1.

On March 24, 2021, the House of Commons voted to designate August 1st as Emancipation Day to commemorate the slavery abolition act of 1833, which took effect in 1834 and paved the way for the liberation of over 800,000 enslaved Black people across the “British Empire”, including parts of the Caribbean, Africa, South America and Canada.

On July 23, Canada Post shared some information about its “final” offers and the vote that is currently underway with members. Information was shared via email as well as distributed in some workplaces.

Voting on Canada Post’s final offers started on Monday July 21. 55.8% of Urban members and 57.8% of RSMC members have already cast a vote. Voting continues until 5 pm EST on August 1.
The deadline to request a paper copy of Canada Post’s final offers is tomorrow, July 25.
There is still time to vote. It is very important for the voices of all members to be heard and to be counted. Every member's voice and vote makes a difference.

Yesterday, July 21, after the start of the forced vote, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) informed the Union of the process it will put in place to allow members who cannot access online versions of Canada Post’s final offers to request a paper copy.

Rumours and misinformation in the age of social media spread quickly and can be harmful to the membership, especially at a crucial time like this. Voting to reject or accept the Employers’ offer began on July 21st at 7: 00 am and will conclude on August 1st at 5:00 pm ET 2025.
