Late yesterday afternoon, Canada Post counsel notified the Arbitrator and our counsel that they would not cross examine either Cathy Kennedy or Sylvain Lapointe. They also stated that they would have no sur reply evidence. This was confirmed via video conference this morning. The evidence portion of the arbitration is now complete.

Dear Sisters, Brothers and Comrades: The current situation is unprecedented and requires us to take exceptional measures to ensure postal workers can safely provide services to all Canadians. For this reason, CUPW, in collaboration with CPC, have developed a tool for Local Joint Health and Safety Committees (LJHSCs), as well as Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) in facilities with 19 or fewer employees.

In Ontario, there is a mandatory government order to close non-essential businesses due to COVID-19. Despite this order, we wanted to ensure that the arbitration hearing continued, so we worked with the Arbitrator, CPC and our IT department to find a way to proceed. This process has been going on for a very long time and we are very close to the end.

Due to the current circumstances (COVID-19), we are no longer meeting with Canada Post. However, we will continue to review remotely the issues pertaining to the 2011 Lockout. On April 2, 2020 (Pay Period 7), CPC will issue another payment to affected members who have not been paid for bereavement, marriage leave and vacation entitlement.

There are currently two members of the St. John’s Local who have been confirmed to have contracted COVID-19 and three presumptive cases. Other members have been tested and are currently in self-quarantine as a precaution. Our thoughts are with them and we send our best wishes to them and their loved ones at this time. We wish everyone who is affected a quick and full recovery.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

As you've likely seen online or heard from the Employer, Canada Post presented two comprehensive offers to CUPW negotiators between 18:00h and 19:00h (EST) last night. Each offer came in a 3-inch binder and contained proposed language that Canada Post wants included in a new collective agreement. The negotiators were given only a brief overview of these offers.

OTTAWA– Postal workers voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action if there is no progress at the bargaining table with Canada Post. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has been bargaining new contracts for its two largest bargaining units – the Urban Operations unit and the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) unit – for almost a year.

10 Days of Action to Protect the Vision of $10 Dollar a Day Child Care for All -
In 2021, the Federal Liberal Government announced its $10 a day Child Care plan, with a commitment of creating 86,000 new public and non-profit Child Care spaces. The centrepiece of this Federal pledge is to spend $30 billion over five years to create a Canada-wide $10-a-day child-care system by 2026.

I am a Registered Early Childhood Educator, and I have over ten years of experience organizing and facilitating programs to meet the diverse needs of families. … Shellie says goodbye… It is with a heavy heart that I leave a job that has inspired me over the past nine years as the CUPW Child Care Coordinator. With the CUPW Child Care Fund in its 33rd year of operation we continue to work hard to achieve the Funds goal of supporting the Child Care needs of CUPW and Union of Postal Communications Employees (UPCE), members and their children.

On October 15, we received notice from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FCMS) that the Minister of Labour appointed two mediators to help us continue bargaining with Canada Post.
The two mediators appointed have already been working with us as “Conciliation Officers” since the start of the Conciliation process on August 13.
