The National Executive Board has selected Lana Smidt as Lead Negotiator of the Urban Negotiating Committee.
It’s time to call for applications from members who are interested in serving on the negotiating committees for our two biggest bargaining units – Urban Postal Operations (UPO) and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC).

As we transition to a post-pandemic world, the importance of income and job security has never been greater. The pandemic resulted in tremendous changes to the courier and postal delivery industry. Parcels increased dramatically while letter mail, advertising mail, and householders declined. Not all the new parcel business went to traditional delivery companies like Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, FedEx, etc. New delivery networks, using companies like Uber expanded, while Amazon started delivering its own parcels in some areas. No one knows what the post pandemic world will look like. Will parcel deliveries decline as shoppers return to the stores? Will advertising mail return? We do not know. But we can say that with the new tentative agreements, our job and income security will not only continue, it will improve.

The tentative collective agreements provide many important elements for all RSMCs and Urban operations workers. No one can predict what the economic situation will be in 2022. Will CPC once again be profitable? Will it continue to lose millions of dollars? No one knows. But with the tentative agreements, members have guaranteed wage increases, improved job security, diversified public postal services, and stability and progress during uncertain times.

In early June, senior Canada Post Corporation representatives approached CUPW with a proposal to extend the current collective agreements by two years and provide a 2% increase in wages. They stated that the uncertainty of the recovery from the pandemic would make our upcoming negotiations extremely difficult. The National Executive Board would like to thank and congratulate all members who participated in the pre-negotiation regional conferences held during recent weeks. In all regions the discussion and debates at both the Urban and RSMC meetings was conducted in the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect.

The National Executive Board has appointed its Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) Negotiation Committee members for 2021–2022. Four members will be joining Sister Nancy Beauchamp, Chief Negotiator.

The National Executive Board has appointed the Negotiation Committee members who will represent the Urban Unit during the 2021–2022 round of negotiations. The five members, which include a technical aid, will be joining Sister Lana Smidt, recently appointed Chief Negotiator for the Urban Operations bargaining unit, bringing diversity and a wealth of experience. Carl Girouard, the National Grievance Officer, in accordance with the National Constitution will act as technical consultant.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Canada Post’s latest information update of November 26 describing what is going on at the bargaining table is full of half-truths and outright deception.
First and foremost, CUPW left the meetings Tuesday since we cannot proceed without Canada Post’s negotiators. They had to go back to speak to the Executive Board of Canada Post for further direction.

Over the weekend, Canada Post informed the public and CUPW members, through the media, that CUPW Negotiators had spent Saturday at the bargaining table talking about cleaners working inside Canada Post facilities. This is an outright misrepresentation.

On November 22, Canada Post released its financial results for the 3rd quarter of 2024.
For the three months ending in September 2024, the Corporation reported a loss from operations of $313 million. Overall revenue was down $15 million compared to the same time last year, as growing revenue from Neighbourhood Mail and Transaction Mail were not enough to offset lower parcel volumes.

In several regions across the country, Canada Post has been calling CUPW members to lay them off. While some are saying it is temporary, we’ve heard stories that it may be more permanent. These types of phone calls are merely a scare tactic by Management. We urge members not to panic if you receive such a call. Instead, take note of what the management representative says and then request a record of employment and estimated date of return in order to allow you to apply for EI benefits.

Yesterday, November 21, the Negotiators continued bargaining with Canada Post with the help of the government’s mediators.

On day 6 of our nationwide strike, we continued talks with the Employer with the help of the government-appointed mediators.
Discussions focused on the same issues as the day before.

In a wide-ranging interview on Tuesday night, Jean-Yves Duclos, the Minister responsible for Canada Post, who heads up the Department of Public Service and Procurement Canada, discussed our ongoing strike and the future of Canada Post with the CBC’s Power and Politics show host, Catherine Cullen. The Minister told Ms. Cullen that the service first mandate “will not change” and that includes “serving every Canadian where they live including northern and remote areas.” He also said that parcel delivery was increasing “at a very high speed” which is “good news” for Canada Post.

OTTAWA– Postal workers across the country will deliver pension and social assistance cheques today despite being on strike.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) negotiated agreements with Canada Post to ensure the delivery of many government cheques that are a fundamental part of the social safety net in anticipation of a strike or lockout.

On day four of the nationwide strike, CUPW Negotiators met for the first time with the new mediator sent by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), along with one of the other mediators that has been working with the parties since August.
