OTTAWA - As tense negotiations continue between postal workers and Canada Post management, the rolling overtime ban that was to start after midnight on Sunday has now been put on hold for 24 hours.

OTTAWA - Last night, the federal Minister of Labour MaryAnn Mihychuk requested that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post management both agree to a 24-hour extension of timelines, in order to allow for the negotiation of a longer extension and ongoing talks.

Dear Minister Foote: We have been informed that the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates will not be accepting submissions when the Committee holds public consultations this fall in connection with the Canada Post Review. As you know, the acceptance of briefs or submissions is normal practice for Committees. Unfortunately, the Standing Committee in question has decided to depart from this practice. It will only conduct e-consultations and hear witnesses in a number of locations. This process will most likely exclude close to 20% of Canadians who do not have access to the Internet (Source: Statistics Canada, 2012).

Dear Mr, Lukiwski: I understand that the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates will hold e-consultations and public hearings in various locations in connection with the Canada Post Review. I also understand it has decided not to accept briefs or submissions, which is normal practice for committees. CUPW would like to request that the Committee reconsider its decision and allow Canadians to make submissions. We believe this would open up the consultations to people who will not be able to participate in the Committee’s main vehicle for input, the online survey. Close to 20% of Canadians do not have access to the Internet (Source: Statistics Canada, 2012).

Dear Minister Foote: It is our understanding that the Clerk of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates has asked committee members for witness suggestions for the public consultations being held this fall in connection with the Canada Post Review. It appears that they were asked on July 13th to send suggestions by July 19th. This is not a reasonable amount of time. Also, it is not clear whether anyone other than committee members will be allowed to make witness suggestions.

For Immediate Release - OTTAWA - While pay equity and pensions have grabbed headlines during the current round of bargaining with Canada Post, postal workers say there are other matters on the table, including bringing back postal banking, an idea which has just been rejected by the big bank lobby.

For Immediate Release - OTTAWA – Postal workers are proposing a 30-day cooling off period to Canada Post management to address concerns about “uncertainty” in the mail system and give negotiations a chance to succeed. “Our members, their families and all Canadians do not deserve to have this threat of a lockout ‘looming’ over our heads from a profitable public service. Postal workers want to work and people need to know that it’s safe to use the mail system,” said Mike Palecek, national president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Today, the RSMC Negotiating Committee met with Canada Post to respond to the Corporation’s September 25 global offer. Since the start of Negotiations, the Employer has told us that it does not want to change the company on the backs of its employees. But after reviewing the Corporation’s offer, we are not satisfied the Employer has lived up to its word.

In the employer’s September 25, 2024, offer they propose to change the pension plan for future employees to Defined Contribution (DC), but they fail to realize or to acknowledge that the proposed changes would also affect the members of the current Defined Benefit (DB) Pension Plan.

The Education Department held a Symposium for CUPW facilitators from September 12 – 15, 2024. In total, 90 people took part, including participants (CUPW worker educators), Regional Education and Organizing Officers (REOOs), Union Reps (URs), staff, those facilitating sessions, guest speakers, and our 2nd National Vice-President, Coleen Jones.

The public post office distributes government cheques that are a vital part of the social safety net. We do not want pensioners and people who rely on government assistance to suffer if the Union is locked out or forced to strike. The most vulnerable members of our society should not be caught in the crosshairs of our contract dispute with Canada Post. In addition, we want to make sure that live animals are not trapped in the mail system during a work disruption.

On several occasions at the negotiation table, Canada Post has referred to the language in our Collective Agreement as NOISE! In the Employer’s view, there is “too much noise” in the Collective Agreement and they have made it clear during this round that they wish for it to be silenced.
