CUPW firmly believes that protest is a legitimate means of expressing opposition to governments and bosses, and advancing demands for justice. It has a long history of demonstrating that by way of strike, rallies, demonstrations and marches. There are several elements that distinguish the type of civil disobedience that CUPW activists take part in, and the convoy that descended on unceded Anishnabe land (Ottawa) over the weekend of January 29, 2022.

CUPW applauds the Canadian government’s overdue passage of Bill C-4 to ban conversion therapy. The Bill became law December 8 and now makes the practice a crime. Conversion therapy has hurt far too many people and caused unnecessary trauma, and we hope this creates a path to healing for the LGBTQ+ community and their families.

CUPW welcomes developments in Palestine where international pressure has resulted in an unconditional ceasefire after 11 days of relentless attacks on Palestinians by Israel. The disproportionate use of modern weaponry against the citizens of Gaza is ongoing state terrorism directed at the people of Palestine. The whole world watched as air strikes and guided missiles destroyed buildings, homes, and medical facilities.

CUPW stands in solidarity with the Mi'kmaq lobster fishers asserting their treaty right to fish for a moderate livelihood. CUPW also condemns the hurtful and hateful actions by some non-Indigenous fishers and their allies. Indigenous people are asserting their legal and traditional rights to fish, should not be met with violence and hate.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, representing 56,300 members condemns the in-custody execution of Soleiman Faqiri and joins the call for full transparency, accountability, and justice for his family. Mr. Faqiri, a man with schizophrenia, loved and supported by his family, and deserving of and requiring medical attention, was placed in segregation where he was brutally beaten and tortured. He was shackled and pepper sprayed with at least six armed guards present. That Mr. Faqiri was beaten is not in dispute. That he is dead as a result isn’t either. A coroner’s report revealed more than 50 signs of “blunt impact trauma” on his body, including on his neck, at the time of his death.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) represents over 50,000 postal workers, cleaners, food couriers, drivers, vehicle mechanics, warehouse workers, printers, and emergency and medical dispatchers across Canada. We commend you for your bold act of solidarity and wish to let you know that CUPW stands behind the Movement for Black Lives and all workers who will be striking on Monday, July 20, to fight for an end to systemic racism, white supremacy, and for justice for workers of colour.

In the wake of a number of murders committed by police in the United States and Canada, CUPW joins an ever-important number of voices that are calling to DEFUND THE POLICE. While attention about the senseless police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis featured widely in Canadian media, Black and Indigenous people in Canada were also killed at the hands of the police.

Over 50 years ago, American Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King said, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” This quote explains and underscores what we are seeing in the media in response to the police killing of a Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is saddened and outraged by the recent violent attacks against Black individuals regionally, nationally and internationally. We are also deeply concerned that last week Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a Black-Indigenous woman, fell more than 20 floors to her death while members of the Toronto police force were present.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Once again, the Government has chosen to take Canada Post’s side. Postal workers need to stand ready to defend their rights and turn these offers down. When the time comes, members need to just VOTE NO! Here are 10 reasons why
Thursday June 12 2025
Today, June 12, the Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, has chosen to accept Canada Post’s request to force a vote on the Employer’s May 28 offers for both CUPW bargaining units. The Minister’s decision is yet another assault on our collective bargaining rights, just the latest we have faced in a matter of just months. In December, former Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon used section 107 to put our legal strike on “pause,” and section 108 to strike an Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC).

Yesterday, June 9, our negotiating committees spoke with federal mediators to hear Canada Post’s response to our proposed Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process. Instead of working toward a balanced framework, Canada Post made it clear it is not serious about meaningful arbitration as was requested by the Minister for Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu. The Employer told us it sees no hope of agreeing on Terms of Reference, refusing to engage in any real discussion.
Friday June 6 2025
Today, the negotiating committees continued to work on drafting the Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process to settle new collective agreements for both postal bargaining units.
Thursday June 5 2025
Today, June 5, the negotiating committees returned to the bargaining table. With the help of federal mediators, the Union is ready to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion. Our goal has remained the same from day one: to reach new collective agreements that meet the needs of postal workers, while ensuring a strengthened public post office.
Thursday June 5 2025
Wednesday, June 4, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, called on both the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post to return to the bargaining table. Today June 5, we have started that process, meetings are now underway. The Minister has requested both parties to focus on two key priorities: working with federal mediators to negotiate terms for an arbitration process, and continuing efforts to reach settlements for new collective agreements.
Wednesday June 4 2025
On Tuesday June 3, 2025, CUPW filed an unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. The complaint stems from the employer bargaining directly with members, knowingly interfering with the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights and purposefully trying to discredit the reputation of the Union.

Fact Sheet Available Online - Now that the extension of our collective agreements has expired, we have started a nationwide overtime ban, and Canada Post has pushed for a forced vote on its “best and final offers,” it is important to remind ourselves of some of the major issues at stake right now.
Tuesday June 3 2025
On May 30, Canada Post sent a letter to Minister Patty Hajdu, responsible for Jobs and Families, asking her to use her power under section 108.1 of the Canada Labour Code to force a vote on the Employer’s latest offers for both bargaining units.

June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the histories, cultures, resistance, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island. This is a day to celebrate Indigenous resurgence and to reflect on the responsibilities we all carry as people living and working on Indigenous lands.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
