Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

In honour of International Women’s Day 2018, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) created a poster, showcasing the diverse women who make up of the fabric of our society and how together, we will fight to bring change and equality for all women. We know this is a tall order as women’s rights continue to be threatened on many fronts. However, it is more important than ever for us to stand‐up and stand together against blatant discrimination and sexism. We cannot sit quietly while society and the justice system repeatedly fail Indigenous women like Tina Fontaine.

Courier companies across Canada follow a similar script: hire drivers, using per piece payments or low wage schemes, and avoid responsibility for paying into pension, workers’ compensation and employment insurance entitlements by labelling the drivers as “independent contractors.” The result of these bosses’ tactics is bigger profits for them, and less for the workers who make the company successful.

Canada Post should be moving with the times by providing high-speed access to Internet Broadband in urban, rural and remote parts of the country. Did you know our postal service actually has a mandate to expand service in light of advances in communications? They should be doing it. Other postal administrations are. For example, post offices in France, Italy and the United Kingdom already offer Broadband service.

The mediation process is ongoing. Remember that every single one of our demands remains on the table and we are working hard to show Canada Post why our demands are so important to all of us. We must all continue to remind Canada Post that we want improved working conditions, wages, benefits, proper staffing, increased and improved services for the public and a greener Canada Post.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
