Breaking through barriers for workers who have children with special needs

On December 7, 2012 Canada Post announced its intent to implement mandatory security screening for all employees, as set out in a “Practice Regarding Security Screening of Personnel.” Under this process, the employer would subject employees to criminal record checks and, in some instances, fingerprinting and credit and solvency checks.

Families in Canada desperately need access to early childhood education and child care services that only a comprehensive system can provide. The key to building this system is the same today as it has been for many years: The federal government must step up to the plate. Provincial/territorial programs on their own will continue to evolve in painful, slow steps leaving many parents unable to find or afford quality programs for their children. As this discussion document shows, it doesn’t—and shouldn’t—have to be this way. Read on to see what federal leadership and dedicated, accountable investment in a child care system could accomplish by 2020.

Stewards’ Action Bulletin (Series 3, Volume 11, Issue 1 • October 2014) On December 11, 2013 Canada Post Corporation (CPC) notified the Union about its 5 Point Plan approximately 1 hour prior to sending out a press release. This plan included eliminating door-todoor mail delivery. On February 20, 2014 CPC announced the first 11 communities to lose their door-to-door delivery. The depots situated within these eleven communities are listed below:

Time flies. Cooper was a premature baby born 8 weeks early. It was a hard beginning for the three of us. When he turned 2 years old, his paediatrician suspected some autism tendencies. It was very hard to hear that. We were living in Alberta at that time with no family support but had great co-workers and very understanding managers there. Thank God my request to transfer to Ontario went through and now we have family and friends to support us. Cooper is almost 3.5 years old now. Last August he started nursery school at a very good daycare. The teachers and other specialists told us it would be really beneficial for Cooper to start going full days but we could not afford it. My wife is still trying to find a sustainable job.

Volume 15 Number 2, December 2013 Help us learn more about the impact of domestic violence in the workplace. When workers experience domestic violence at home, the workplace is impacted. To date, no Canadian research has been done on the scope and impact of domestic violence in the workplace. A new research study being launched December 6, 2013 will help fill this gap.

Volume 41, Number 4, November 2013 - Postal unions and groups stood before a giant piggy bank emblazoned with the words “Banking on a Future for Canada Post” and called for financial and banking services at post offices during a media conference on October 16th.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

A federal election has now been called for April 28, 2025. Although the Canadian Union of Postal Workers does not endorse any party, we will be putting pressure on candidates from all parties to commit to defending our public post office and good stable jobs.

On Thursday, March 20, CUPW will join U.S. postal workers in a day of action to defend the public post office. The United States Postal Service (USPS) is facing one of the most serious threats in its history. Postal worker jobs and unions, and the USPS’s public service mission are under assault by the Trump administration that seems to have one end goal in mind: privatization.

Sunday March 2 2025
CUPW negotiators met with Canada Post, March 1 – 2, to resolve our bargaining dispute and achieve new collective agreements for the Urban and RSMC units. CUPW came to the bargaining table prepared to negotiate collective agreements that will benefit postal workers and strengthen the public post office for generations to come. The Union offered meaningful proposals to help Canada Post expand into weekend parcel deliveries, while protecting full-time jobs. However, the Corporation continued to push for serious rollbacks that would gut our agreements, explode part-time and temporary work, and undermine our full-time jobs.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
