Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Members of Unifor have occupied the Northstar Aerospace plant in Milton, Ontario. The plant was purchased by Heligear Acquisition Co. in 2012. Heligear intends to move the plant to Chicago, cutting jobs and leaving the workers’ pension with a massive deficit. Unifor members at Northstar have been told their pension will be reduced by 25%. After months of negotiations, Unifor has been forced to take drastic action.

Last year’s negotiations for both Urban and RSMC members were settled with two short-term collective agreements, and very little progress. While we succeeded in temporarily halting the austerity-drive, all of our most substantial issues remain unresolved. Now with the government review of Canada Post finished, and the Liberals still dragging their feet on decisions, we are getting ready to head back to the bargaining table. Nobody should expect an easy round of bargaining.

Dear Sisters and Brothers: Once again, forest fires have hit Western Canada and threaten nearby communities. They also affect air quality, which will make physical work even more difficult in the weeks ahead for our members at Canada Post and Dynamex. For now, mail delivery has been suspended by Canada Post in nearly twenty municipalities in the province. Neighbouring towns will also be dealing, if they are not already, with poor air quality, which could deteriorate to the point where physical work outside becomes very difficult.

Parts of the country are affected by extended heat waves in the summer. Find out about the dangers caused by heatwaves. Take the necessary precautions and encourage your brothers and sisters to do the same.

Can we have a better future? Can our children and future generations have a secure and holistic future? All is possible. In Canada’s celebration of 150 years of colonialism there are some important questions missing.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
