Some are asking how the overtime ban applies during the upcoming long weekend. Eight hours is eight hours - The overtime ban applies to ALL work performed at a premium rate (Remembrance Day is therefore part of the OT ban.) The overtime ban DOES NOT prevent part-time extensions and work for temporary workers up to a maximum of eight hours per day, forty hours per week.

Today, Minister of Labour Ms Patty Hajdu extended the appointment of
Mr. Morton Mitchnick as a mediator, for a period of 4 days, to assist the parties in reaching negotiated collective agreements. Your negotiating committee will work with Mr. Mitchnick to achieve the improvements that we need in our collective agreements.

On November 5, 2018 in the early evening, Sisters Jan Simpson, Nancy Beauchamp, Brothers Mike Palecek and Sylvain Lapointe met with Minister of Labour, Ms Patty Hajdu and Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility, Ms Carla Qualtrough. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the state of negotiations. At this meeting, we reiterated our will to achieve negotiated settlements.

For years Canada Post management submitted false injury reports to Labour Canada and claimed that injuries were being dramatically reduced. Eventually management was caught and the truth about injuries at Canada Post was revealed.

After more than ten months of negotiations, the intervention of two mediators and two weeks of rotating strikes, Canada Post is more and more showing its true colours. All of its lofty rhetoric and the image it is attempting to project to its employees and the public are turning out to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors. It needs to be said: Canada Post talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk.

Today, the mandate of the mediator appointed by the Minister of Labour, Ms.Patti Hajdu, ended. The mediator, Mr. Morton Mitchnick, had been working with the parties since October 24, 2018. In spite of the assistance of the mediator, Canada Post has refused to resolve any of your key issues.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

On February 19 and 20, the second round of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa.
The format for these hearings will be similar to the first. Commissioner Kaplan has asked both CUPW and Canada Post to provide him with written submissions before the hearings begin.

During the last convention, the Regional Internal Organizing Committees were formalized as per clause 4.15 of the National Constitution, with a mandate to, among other things, promote the benefits of organizing by developing materials and tools that facilitate work floor mobilization and to identify effective actions in the continued fight for worker rights.
