On Monday, January 27, the first hearing of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa. This Commission was convened by the Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon under section 108 of the Canada Labour Code.
In preparation for the first day of hearings, The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post submitted written briefs and will also provide rebuttals. Despite the Commissioner assigning strict deadlines, Canada Post had to request extensions.
A subsequent hearing will take place on Tuesday, January 28, with more hearings expected in February and March.
As we have noted in earlier bulletins, the Commission’s proceedings will be livestreamed. CUPW members and the public will be able to watch these critical discussions about the future of Canada Post and the issues that matter to all of us.
The Commission hearings will be available via a webinar link. Please note there is a maximum of 1,000 viewers – you will only be able to watch, not participate. We will send the link out on Monday morning via eDigest and our Member Database email lists.
Commissioner Kaplan has let us know that he will be accepting written submissions from the public, stakeholder or interested parties. Submissions will be due February 14, 2024.
They can be sent to: edsc.cdi-iic.esdc@labour-travail.gc.ca . We are trying to get a mailing address also.
Submissions will be made available to both Canada Post and the Union and will be reviewed as part of the Commission process.
We encourage all members to make a submission to let Commissioner Kaplan know what matters to them, and what the future public post office looks like to them.
We encourage all members to sign up for E-digest to receive the latest Union news and updates directly in your email inbox. Find the E-digest here: https://www.cupw.ca/en/cupw-edigest
In Solidarity,
