Late last year, Canada Post requested to the Pay Equity arbitrator that their consultant should be allowed to write another report, they had said the reason for this request is that they had listen to the Union’s concerns. Arbitrator Flynn agreed and after an additional delay, ordered Canada Post to submit this second report by January 24th, 2018.

The continued growth in parcel volumes is causing Canada Post to offer more weekend work and more work on statutory holidays. It is important that if you work on a statutory holiday that you are paid correctly.

As mentioned in our previous bulletin, we had hoped that Arbitrator Flynn would be able to help the employer clarify its position. However, we quickly realized that our hopes were not shared.

During the last round of negotiations, the Union and Canada Post agreed to switch from current payroll to arrears payroll for full-time Urban Operations members. This change will occur in January 2018 and will not impact the amount of your pay.

On October 16, Canada Post’s pay equity consultant issued, a very disappointing report, which states that there is no wage disparity between RSMCs and urban letter carriers. After reading this report, we initiated the negotiations period set out in the memorandum of agreement on the pay equity study.

This week, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers issued notice to bargain to Canada Post for both of our major bargaining units. After years of raucous labour-relations, attacks from government and violations of our constitutional right to free collective bargaining, there are many issues that must be resolved. The Urban Operations unit and the Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers unit will again meet the employer as one committee. Rural-Urban solidarity is key to achieving our demands.

As per Arbitrator Flynn’s order, the Pay Equity Consultants have submitted their reports on October 16th. Paul Durber, the CUPW consultant, has concluded that the work of an RSMC is of equal value to that of the male comparators and that RSMCs (Zone 1) receive direct wages which range from 24% less than letter carriers to 27% less than Mail Service Couriers – Heavy Vehicle. Durber also analyzed the differences that exist due to the additional benefits received by the male comparators.

On August 28, the parties met with Maureen Flynn, the arbitrator appointed under the RSMC Pay Equity Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.
