N00-22-00004 (URBAN) / N00-22-R0004 (RSMC) - In August 2022, Canada Post consulted with CUPW to modify its employee recognition program, better known as the “Bravo Recognition Program”. During the national consultation, CUPW objected that the recognition program contained several violations of both the RSMC and Urban collective agreements. Among other things, the program violates CUPW’s right to act as the exclusive bargaining agent.
Since the National Executive Board unanimously approved Building Worker Power in August, we’ve worked diligently to put it into action. Our first major step was selecting Regional Organizers who will establish a trained and responsive internal organizing structure in each region. We thank the many members that applied to offer their considerable strengths and skills to the campaign and look forward to building up our capacity to fight the boss, together.
The second National Truth and Reconciliation Day will take place September 30. As one of the 94 calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the purpose of this day is to commemorate and honour the lives of Indigenous people killed by the State and the Church.
September 23 marks the Global Climate Strike. CUPW endorses the strike organizers’ demand that policymakers and world leaders prioritize #PeopleNotProfit!
During the 2018 round of bargaining, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee to review the collective agreement articles concerning Groups 3 and 4. Unfortunately, the project was placed on hold due to the pandemic.
In early July of this year, Canada Post approached the Union with a slip, trip and fall pilot project. The pilot project would use an American based company that provides a slip, trip and fall simulator. On August 2, 2022, Union representatives from the Local, Regional and National offices visited the Windsor Depot to review, experience and evaluate the simulator.
Fuel cost along with all other incurred expenses for RSMCs have been rising consistently all year. The cost of fuel alone has risen by 40 percent since December 2021.
RSMCs receive money from Canada Post to pay for the use of their vehicles at a rate set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). That amount is updated yearly and was last updated at the start of 2022 based on prices from November 2021. With this sudden increase in inflation, including the cost of gas, the math no longer makes sense.
CUPW is currently seeking eight members to assist with the 'Building Worker Power' campaign as a Regional Organizer (RO).
Starting September 2022, anyone appointed as a RO will be tasked with collaborating with the 3rd National Vice-President, their Regional office, and the Locals within their region, to travel between locals to help empower our work-floors, revitalize our membership, and help our union regain its fighting spirit!

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.
CUPW is currently seeking a CUPW worker organizer in the Ontario Region to assist with CUPW external organizing campaigns. The position will begin July 2023 and will be up for renewal every six months pending the direction of the campaign. The successful candidate will be tasked with collaborating with the 3rd National Vice-President, Ontario Regional office, and the Locals involved in the campaign.
OTTAWA – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) announced today that it has entered into an agreement to settle (the “Settlement Agreement”) the action of CUPW v B’nai Brith Canada et al., that is currently pending in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (the “Action”).
Over 600 CUPW members across the country gathered in Toronto during the first week of May for the CUPW National Convention. Over five days, delegates decided on the future direction of the Union and adopted an action plan to guide us as we continue the fight for better working conditions and wages, and for a strong and innovative public post office that serves all communities.

We need union representatives to sit on the national working groups (section 8 (b) of Appendix “AA”). The mandate of these working groups is to carry out work related to projects approved by the Appendix "AA" National Committee (section 5 of Appendix "AA").
Forest fires are raging again this year, and once again, Alberta’s resilience is being tested. Reports estimate that as of May 7, 122,000 hectares have been lost. More fires have been reported, like in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, also in the Northwest Territories, where roughly 25,000 residents have already been evacuated. The surrounding communities are currently on high alert, fearing the worst.
In September 2021, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee responsible for the transition to an hourly rate for RSMCs. The work of the committee started in May 2022.

Ottawa – Jan Simpson, the first Black woman to lead a National Union in Canada, has been re-elected to an historic second term as National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). This gives her a decisive mandate to take the Union forward as it faces tough collective bargaining negotiations. In another first, the National Executive Committee is now predominantly female.
