These are challenging and stressful times for CUPW members. The loss of normalcy; the loss of connection; the invisible, unknown health risks, and not knowing what tomorrow will bring are all testing us. The whole world is feeling worried – including me.

I want to send a message to my entire CUPW family, all of our active members and our retirees. First of all, I want you to know that during this time of crisis, our CUPW leadership is absolutely focused on protecting our membership in every way we can. We are facing the most significant health crisis in memory and I know that our families and members — and all working people— are worried, unsure of what tomorrow will bring and facing hardships and extremely difficult challenges and decisions.

Like most sensible people, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) sees a 1.8% profit margin on revenues at Canada Post as great news: modestly better than break-even, with some extra cash to reinvest in the service – isn’t that exactly how we want a crown corporation to perform? Of course, it’s on brand for the Motley Fool to throw out conventional wisdom and make an unorthodox proposal to butcher and privatize the Canada Post Group of companies. The thing is, it’s far-fetched and based on little understanding of how the postal system works, therefore no constructive ideas about improving it.

Negotiations have barely started and already, the public attacks on postal workers’ pensions have begun. This week, the National Post ran an op-ed attacking postal workers’ pensions. Terrence Corcoran goes beyond all sane limits, not only painting a biased picture of the pension plan, but in fact blaming postal workers for “concocting” Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s glaring conflict of interest.

Huge turnouts at strike votes: we’re ready to take on the boss! I’m in Vancouver doing workfloor meetings and strike vote meetings, having just returned from a week in Calgary, where great numbers of postal workers turned out to vote against management’s rollbacks. I’m hearing similar reports of massive participation in our strike votes from across the country. Go CUPW go!

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Today, June 12, the Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, has chosen to accept Canada Post’s request to force a vote on the Employer’s May 28 offers for both CUPW bargaining units.
The Minister’s decision is yet another assault on our collective bargaining rights, just the latest we have faced in a matter of just months. In December, former Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon used section 107 to put our legal strike on “pause,” and section 108 to strike an Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC).

Yesterday, June 9, our negotiating committees spoke with federal mediators to hear Canada Post’s response to our proposed Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process. Instead of working toward a balanced framework, Canada Post made it clear it is not serious about meaningful arbitration as was requested by the Minister for Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu. The Employer told us it sees no hope of agreeing on Terms of Reference, refusing to engage in any real discussion.

Today, the negotiating committees continued to work on drafting the Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process to settle new collective agreements for both postal bargaining units.

Today, June 5, the negotiating committees returned to the bargaining table. With the help of federal mediators, the Union is ready to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion. Our goal has remained the same from day one: to reach new collective agreements that meet the needs of postal workers, while ensuring a strengthened public post office.

Wednesday, June 4, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, called on both the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post to return to the bargaining table. Today June 5, we have started that process, meetings are now underway. The Minister has requested both parties to focus on two key priorities: working with federal mediators to negotiate terms for an arbitration process, and continuing efforts to reach settlements for new collective agreements.

On Tuesday June 3, 2025, CUPW filed an unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. The complaint stems from the employer bargaining directly with members, knowingly interfering with the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights and purposefully trying to discredit the reputation of the Union.

Now that the extension of our collective agreements has expired, we have started a nationwide overtime ban, and Canada Post has pushed for a forced vote on its “best and final offers,” it is important to remind ourselves of some of the major issues at stake right now.

On May 30, Canada Post sent a letter to Minister Patty Hajdu, responsible for Jobs and Families, asking her to use her power under section 108.1 of the Canada Labour Code to force a vote on the Employer’s latest offers for both bargaining units.
