After nearly nine months of largely unproductive talks, on January 15, 2020, the Union presented a global offer to the employer. The offer, made on a without prejudice basis, included the issues discussed at the previous GMMs, such as wage increases in the years after Bill 148 that would see Communications Officers back on par with the wages of an ACP; an increase to annual leave entitlements; payout of unused Education Allowance; introduction of a Temporary Employee Supplement; addressing the unilateral change made by the employer to the designation of SCOs and the payment of the responsibility premium; and, finally, addressing the LTD premiums by joining the HANS LTD plan.

On behalf of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, I would like to extend our best wishes of solidarity for your proposed October 26 general strike against inequality and anti-worker programs. It is clear that as wealth trickles up to the rich, our societies, and indeed the capitalist system, has become more volatile and unpredictable. In fact, if allowed to continue such as system will not only impoverish and divide us all but destroy the planet. Youth are condemned to an unstable future and a precarious present. Let us hope this inspiring action is but a step in achieving global justice in every neighborhood, community and workplace.

CUPW has always had a clear and consistent policy on security certificates: it is opposed to them. This is why, over the years, we have publicly supported the struggle of Mohamed Harkat. Security certificates, which are used to deport non-Canadians from Canada, have existed under one form or another since 1978, but they were strengthened under the Harper government. One of the Union’s fundamental objections to them is that the accused is refused access to any information regarding his or her case. As a result, the accused person is deprived of the means for a full defense. This is the case for Mohamed Harkat.

We regret any Canadian support, either directly or through silence, about the ongoing atrocities occurring on your occupied lands. We cannot condone any support for a regime of hatred based on continuing land theft and human rights abuses. In reality, the Nakba has never really ended.

Dear Mr. Trudeau, On behalf of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, I am writing with concern and dismay over the mistreatment and injustice of the extradition of Hassan Diab. This theft of Mr. Diab’s liberty by the Harper government maintained a legal farce of several years that Canadian government was complicit in. Dr. Hassan Diab spent more than three years in French detention with no charges being laid. A confidential memo obtained by CBC News revealed that more than a flawed extradition law was at play.

I am writing to request that you examine the decision-making that led to the incorrect reporting of injuries to labour Canada by Canada Post during the years 2010 to 2017 and determine if the incorrect reporting of workplace injuries resulted in improper bonuses being paid to senior management of Canada Post.

Dear Premier Horgan, As a trade unionist, born and raised in British Columbia, Ginger Goodwin has always had a special place in my heart. Ginger was murdered in 1918, after leading the first strike for the eight‑hour day in this country. He was a prominent socialist, anti-war activist and union leader in his day, and has become immortalized as a martyr of British Columbia’s labour movement. To this day, Ginger Goodwin inspires many who dream of a better world.

OTTAWA - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) call on the Ontario government to strengthen Bill 148, The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act. Ontario members of CUPW sent a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne raising concerns on amendments introduced after the tabling of the bill.

We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Brother Bob White. Bob was a passionate defender of the working class throughout his life. CUPW owes him a debt of gratitude for the role he played, as head of the Canadian Labour Congress, in helping our union win employee status and a collective agreement for over 6000 Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers. We shall forever be grateful for his assistance and support.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. In its efforts to convince postal workers to accept its so called “best and final offer”, Canada Post claims to have dropped many of its original proposals for rollbacks. It says it no longer has plans to put all new employees on defined contribution pensions. It says its proposals will not end route ownership for letter carriers and RSMCs. It says it is not attacking job security. It even says it is no longer demanding higher premiums for retiree benefits. What it does not say is that it has plans to bring every one of these rollbacks back to the negotiating table.

On June 12, Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu granted Canada Post’s request and chose to force a vote on the Employer’s “best and final offers” for both postal bargaining units. Once again, the Government has stepped into our bargaining process, attacking our rights and taking the Employer’s side. We didn’t ask for this fight, but we are ready to face it.

Today, June 12, the Minister of Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu, has chosen to accept Canada Post’s request to force a vote on the Employer’s May 28 offers for both CUPW bargaining units. The Minister’s decision is yet another assault on our collective bargaining rights, just the latest we have faced in a matter of just months. In December, former Minister of Labour, Steven MacKinnon used section 107 to put our legal strike on “pause,” and section 108 to strike an Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC).

Yesterday, June 9, our negotiating committees spoke with federal mediators to hear Canada Post’s response to our proposed Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process. Instead of working toward a balanced framework, Canada Post made it clear it is not serious about meaningful arbitration as was requested by the Minister for Jobs and Families, Patty Hajdu. The Employer told us it sees no hope of agreeing on Terms of Reference, refusing to engage in any real discussion.

Today, the negotiating committees continued to work on drafting the Terms of Reference for a binding interest arbitration process to settle new collective agreements for both postal bargaining units.

Today, June 5, the negotiating committees returned to the bargaining table. With the help of federal mediators, the Union is ready to bring these negotiations to a successful conclusion. Our goal has remained the same from day one: to reach new collective agreements that meet the needs of postal workers, while ensuring a strengthened public post office.

Wednesday, June 4, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, called on both the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post to return to the bargaining table. Today June 5, we have started that process, meetings are now underway. The Minister has requested both parties to focus on two key priorities: working with federal mediators to negotiate terms for an arbitration process, and continuing efforts to reach settlements for new collective agreements.

On Tuesday June 3, 2025, CUPW filed an unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. The complaint stems from the employer bargaining directly with members, knowingly interfering with the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights and purposefully trying to discredit the reputation of the Union.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
