Brothers and Sisters,

We, the 52,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), stand in solidarity with the 168 workers of Greenbrier-Maxion who have been dismissed illegally and we support the demand of the International Labour Network for Solidarity and Struggles to rehire them immediately.

Greenbrier-Maxion is a joint venture between American companies Greenbrier and Amsted Rail with the Brazilian Lochpe-Maxion. They are the largest provider of materials for rail across South America, 168 workers, 86 injured workers among them, have been fired from their plant in Hortolandia, in Sao Paulo State.

These workers are unionised and their contract prevents any dismissal of injured workers in any case but dismissal with fair reason. The “fair reason” raised by the company is that these workers have certificates issued by a non-certified school. Many of them have worked for the company for more than ten years. What is not fair is to breach the contract and dismiss injured workers for some reason, which the workers are not responsible for.

We demand that the Company rehire the 168 Workers Now!
