Dear Doug Ettinger:

On behalf of the 450,000 members of National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), I am writing to express our concern about the approach Canada Post is taking towards negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

In contract negotiations the objective of responsible parties is to reach a fair, equitable and enforceable collective agreement. Unfortunately, that it not the approach you appear to have been taking.

Instead, Canada Post has been focused on undermining the union. Most recently it was by asking for a forced vote of union members on its offer. With the rejection of the Canada Post offer by CUPW members, it should be clear that continuing to attack the union will not lead to a reasonable settlement.

The rejection of the management offer by CUPW members sends a clear message that a new approach is needed. It is important not just for people working at Canada Post, but for Canada as a whole, that Canda Post management heed that message.

As CUPW has made clear with its Delivering Community Power campaign, there is plenty that can be done to reshape the post office in ways that strengthen and expand the public services people receive. If the management at Canada Post is genuinely committed to revitalizing the post office and providing services Canadians will need in the years to come, they should be following the excellent suggestions from the CUPW, instead of attacking them.

Failing to build stronger, more effective public services to help us withstand the Trump tariffs would be a step backwards.

NUPGE is encouraged to see that, as well as standing up for its members, the CUPW is fighting to protect public services and ensure they evolve to meet emerging needs. We support their efforts and are proud to stand in solidarity with them. What is sad is that the CUPW is having to fight to get the management of Canada Post to see this too.

Sincerely,

Bert  Blundon
President
