Dear Prime Minister:

Re: Your government’s commitment to look at all options during the Canada Post Review plus election promises to restore home mail delivery

I am writing to raise concerns about the government’s failure to live up to its commitment to consider all possibilities for Canada Post’s future.

Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, promised that the government’s Canada Post Review would look at all options, but this did not really happen. We did not see any serious investigation of postal banking.

CUPW is calling on your government and Canada Post to work with us to examine the potential for financial and banking services at our public postal service.

We urge you to make postal banking part of the government’s response to the parliamentary committee report on the future of Canada Post.

We also urge you to make the Oliver Wyman report public and instruct Canada Post to release the secret study it conducted on postal banking, the uncensored parts of which suggest it would be a “win-win” for our public post office.

I am also writing to ask you to fulfill election promises to restore door-to-door delivery. As you may recall, you said you would “restore home delivery, where it is necessary, where it fits, where there’s a clear desire to do it” while on the election trail in Montreal on September 3, 2015. A number of other Liberal Members of Parliament expressed similar and stronger commitments both during and after the election.

CUPW welcomes the recent parliamentary committee recommendation to restore door-to-door delivery to Canadians who lost this service as of the federal election as a step in the right direction. However, we do not think this proposal goes far enough.  We suspect people who lost their service prior to the election will agree.

We urge you to make good on repeated Liberal promises to restore home mail delivery and include full restoration in the government’s response to the parliamentary committee report on the future of Canada Post.

We look forward to your rely to these urgent matters.

Yours truly,

Mike Palecek,
National President
