For Urban Postal Operations (UPO) and Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) members starting January 1st, 2015, we will begin a new reimbursement period for our Vision benefit.

Currently as CUPW members who work at Canada Post we have a defined benefit pension plan. WHAT IS A DEFINED BENEFIT PENSION PLAN? A defined benefit (DB) pension plan is a plan in which the monthly retirement pension is determined by a set formula, rather than depending on investment returns or the health of the plan. The formula for the Canada Post Pension Plan is determined by our years of service and our earnings in the best five years of consecutive service. For part-time and RSMC workers, years of service are seen as a ratio of full-time hours.

Before going over the recent developments regarding our pension plan, I would like to remind you of the principles that guide the Union in all of its discussions regarding the plan, whether with Canada Post or with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI). These principles are as follows:

One of the most significant steps forward in the new RSMC collective agreement is the inclusion of RSMCs in the Canada Post Extended Health Care Plan (EHCP). Coverage for drugs is now included in the EHCP in addition to hospital coverage and a number of different paramedical expenses such as acupuncture, chiropractor, electrologist, massage therapy, midwife, naturopathic, osteopathic, physiotherapy, podiatrist, psychology, social work, and speech therapy treatments.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Bar charts are calculated from September 1 to August 31 annually. Because of the strike, which took place from November 15 to December 13, 2024, there were only nine working days each in November and December. In this case, we concluded an agreement with Canada Post, similar to the one reached in 2018, to exclude those 22 days from the bar charts calculations.

Today, February 19, the Industrial Inquiry Commission held its third day of hearings. We received an update on the number of submissions made to the Commission before the public deadline – approximately 900! The Commission hopes to have these all made available to the Parties by Friday.

OTTAWA - Today, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will continue to present its case during two days of hearings at the Industrial Inquiry Commission in Ottawa.

On February 19 and 20, the second round of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa. The format for these hearings will be similar to the first. Commissioner Kaplan has asked both CUPW and Canada Post to provide him with written submissions before the hearings begin.
