The longest day of the year falls on June 21, when the life-giving sun shines longest in the northern hemisphere. Historically, it is revered for the renewal of the cycles of life and the seasons. The Canadian Government has also recognized this day as National Indigenous Peoples Day “to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of Canada's Indigenous Peoples.”

We’re trying to build momentum in CUPW negotiations with TForce Final Mile (fka Dynamex). Our original intent was to bring TForce to the bargaining table to negotiate with all the bargaining units as one, with a single set of demands on our side. This was to maximize our bargaining power and show the employer that the union’s issues in one location matter to members in all locations.

On June 6, 2018, the bargaining committees of both parties met with CUPW National President Mike Palecek and CPC Chairperson and Interim President Jessica McDonald. The meeting had been requested by Canada Post to permit Ms. McDonald and National President Mike Palecek to articulate their perspectives on the current negotiations, the recent Pay Equity Award and the ongoing Pay Equity process.

For Immediate Release - Ottawa - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is pleased to announce its support of the 2018 Freedom Flotilla Coalition as it challenges the illegal and inhumane blockade of Gaza. At its most recent meeting, the National Executive Board adopted a resolution in support of Brother Ron Rousseau’s participation in the Canadian Boat to Gaza.

In a previous round of bargaining, Canada Post Corporation’s Chief Negotiator for the RSMC unit called the RSMCs a ‘competitive advantage,’ referring to the cost savings Canada Post realized from the wage gap between RSMCs and Urban unit letter carriers. Now Canada Post must eat those words.

In her 176 page decision, Arbitrator Flynn accepted the “derived hourly rate” methodology proposed by CUPW and rejected the point of call approach proposed by Canada Post Corporation. She stated: “the Tribunal comes to the conclusion that the Corporation’s methodology must be rejected. It is not reasonably accurate nor is it reliable. Rather, it is fundamentally flawed and , consequently, produces so-called compensation results that do not correspond to the employees’ respective realities in light of all the evidence that was adduced in this case.”

Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers Ruled Equal to Letter Carriers in Landmark Pay Equity Case - Ottawa – Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) earned a long-awaited victory, as an arbitrator ruled they do work of equal value to urban letter carriers and that there is a wage gap between the two groups. Arbitrator Maureen Flynn also rejected how Canada Post assessed RSMC compensation, accepting instead the methodology presented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

Bargaining for a Better Future at Canada Post - Over the last several years, postal workers have faced attacks from both management and the Government. When we first launched the Save Canada Post campaign, many said that it was a lost cause. Even some of our allies didn't think it was possible to stop the cuts that had been announced. It's a good thing we didn't listen to them! After years of mobilization, we finally succeeded in defeating Harper's agenda and saved door to door delivery.

We received the pay equity arbitration award from Arbitrator Flynn. The award is lengthy and complex and was written only in English. It is currently being translated by CUPW. At this time, we can confirm that the arbitrator has ruled that RSMCs perform work of equal value to that of letter carriers. She has also ruled that a wage gap exists between RSMCs and letter carriers.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Following Arbitrator Burkett’s decision on May 25, 2023, the parties agreed to a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as well as amendments to Chapter 7 of the LCRMS. The MOA does not grant retroactive payment as of the date of implementation of a restructure for grievances relating to loading and unloading time. This aspect is also covered in Arbitrator Burkett’s decision.

In early 2023, the Corporation announced that the Supervisor’s Incident Investigation Report (SIIR) would be replaced by the Hazardous Occurrence Investigation Report (HOIR), also known as ESDC LAB1070. The new report must be completed jointly by employer and union representatives following the joint investigation.

In December 2021, CPC presented CUPW with its five-year plan for mental health in the workplace. With this plan, the Corporation aimed to identify problematic situations in order to meet its obligation to ensure healthy and safe working conditions, both physically and psychologically. This plan also relied on the support of our Social Stewards’ Network to succeed.

Sister Megan Whitfield, a long-time postal worker and activist, possessed all the qualities and so many more. Sister Whitfield was a mentor and friend to many, and she dedicated her life to improving the lives of working people.

A crucial part of Canada Post’s mandate as a Crown Corporation is financial self-sufficiency. Since it was founded in 1981, it has had more profitable years than losses and paid millions in taxes and dividends. But the industry has changed, and the decline in letter mail continues year after year. The letter mail monopoly no longer pays the bills.

Back-to-work legislation is always an infringement of workers’ rights -- Hearings are now concluded in the Ontario Superior Court on our constitutional challenge to the 2018 back to work legislation. CUPW leaders, activists, and our legal counsel worked hard and presented a strong case before Judge Edward Morgan to have the legislation declared unconstitutional and defend our free collective bargaining rights.

CUPW launched its postal banking campaign with a giant inflatable piggy bank in downtown Ottawa.
