Remembering and Honouring Residential School Survivors
On September 30, we observe Orange Shirt Day, a movement that officially began in 2013 in British Columbia to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, representing 56,300 members condemns the in-custody execution of Soleiman Faqiri and joins the call for full transparency, accountability, and justice for his family. Mr. Faqiri, a man with schizophrenia, loved and supported by his family, and deserving of and requiring medical attention, was placed in segregation where he was brutally beaten and tortured. He was shackled and pepper sprayed with at least six armed guards present. That Mr. Faqiri was beaten is not in dispute. That he is dead as a result isn’t either. A coroner’s report revealed more than 50 signs of “blunt impact trauma” on his body, including on his neck, at the time of his death.

We commend you for your bold act of solidarity and wish to let you know that CUPW stands behind the Movement for Black Lives and all workers who will be striking on Monday, July 20, to fight for an end to systemic racism, white supremacy, and for justice for workers of colour.

Hatred and disinformation do not build workers’ power or solidarity. When cyberbullies attack, using vile and hateful words against others; when social media feeds are used to label, accuse, and detract from the real issues; when desktop warriors spend hours trolling online but will not spend an ounce of energy building positive workplaces and communities; it weakens us all.

In the wake of a number of murders committed by police in the United States and Canada, CUPW joins an ever-important number of voices that are calling to DEFUND THE POLICE. While attention about the senseless police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis featured widely in Canadian media, Black and Indigenous people in Canada were also killed at the hands of the police.

Indigenous people urged for decades for a national solidarity day with Indigenous peoples. It is astonishing that it took until the 21st century to see this symbolic gesture. European settlers stole these territories through dishonesty and bad faith agreements. Ours is a society that, for generations, attempted to erase and assimilate these cultures, rather than recognize their contributions for a healthy and respectful society that honours all life. Every year we produce a poster developed by an Indigenous artist to honour this day and generations of Indigenous peoples sidelined by colonialism.

Pride events are a beautiful and complex union of celebration and resistance. Over the decades, Pride festivals and parades have done so much for visibility, community organizing, and bringing LGBTQ issues and achievements into the spotlight.

Over 50 years ago, American Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King said, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” This quote explains and underscores what we are seeing in the media in response to the police killing of a Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is saddened and outraged by the recent violent attacks against Black individuals regionally, nationally and internationally. We are also deeply concerned that last week Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a Black-Indigenous woman, fell more than 20 floors to her death while members of the Toronto police force were present.

On May 17th, we join over 130 other countries worldwide in celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. We must remember and acknowledge the continued systemic injustice faced by the LGBTQ community. The theme for this year is Breaking the Silence. It was chosen as a reminder that for most of their lives, LGTBQ people have been made to feel ashamed, stigmatized and have had to hide their sexualities, gender identities or sex characteristics.

Every May, CUPW celebrates Asian and South Asian Heritage Month. During this time, we acknowledge and celebrate Asian workers in Canada. The country we know and love, would not be as it is today without the incredible efforts and contributions of Asian Canadians. As such, the Canadian government officially recognized May as Asian Heritage Month back in 2002. Many groups, however, have been celebrating since the 1990s.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

CUPW and Canada Post met with Commissioner Kaplan after the fourth day of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission to discuss the next steps. During this meeting, the Parties agreed to return to a parallel two-day negotiations process on March 1 and 2 to try to negotiate new collective agreements for the Urban and RSMC units. Mr. Kaplan will once again serve as Mediator.

Today, February 20, the Industrial Inquiry Commission resumed for a fourth day of hearings with both CUPW and Canada Post presenting their rebuttals.
The Parties were asked to provide detailed costed proposals for this month’s hearings. While CUPW presented well-thought out and researched proposals, the Corporation repeated the same old talking points without submitting documentation or costing to prove that its proposals could return Canada Post to financial sustainability. The Corporation instead proposed new language.

Bar charts are calculated from September 1 to August 31 annually. Because of the strike, which took place from November 15 to December 13, 2024, there were only nine working days each in November and December. In this case, we concluded an agreement with Canada Post, similar to the one reached in 2018, to exclude those 22 days from the bar charts calculations.

Today, February 19, the Industrial Inquiry Commission held its third day of hearings. We received an update on the number of submissions made to the Commission before the public deadline – approximately 900! The Commission hopes to have these all made available to the Parties by Friday.

OTTAWA - Today, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will continue to present its case during two days of hearings at the Industrial Inquiry Commission in Ottawa.

On February 19 and 20, the second round of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa.
The format for these hearings will be similar to the first. Commissioner Kaplan has asked both CUPW and Canada Post to provide him with written submissions before the hearings begin.
